Yep, worse meet in ages. Not the meet itself my performance. Went 3/9 but I only have myself to blame. I knew going in I was either going to have a good or bad meet. I cut to 198 with one goal breaking the DL world record, and I failed. Close but failed. I thought the judging was a bit tight. I also hate the venue, outdoors sucks and warming up in that zoo sucks. But I will be back next year.

Well hit my openers, obviously 3/9, 540/424/600. Missed all the seconds, obviously 600/450/665. I honestly thought I was deep enough but the judging was really, really, really tough. The same squat depth with 622 passed@ the America Cup in February and Worlds in November. All that might mean is that I received gifts there. I thought I might get lucky and get 2 whites on my dead but only got 1. I was close but I don't think my hips were locked but it was damn close. My son said he didn't think they were. The bench, same ****. Warmups hit 405 raw for a touch and go put my shirt in and blow the lockouts.

No excuses but the cut to 198 was hard. I did it poorly. Also I was handleing my wife. This was her first meet so it was important things went smooth and she had a good time, which both did happen. The worse thing was not having her wrap my knees for my 3rd attempt, I suck @ wrapping my own knees. Also being outside was tough, it was hot and I am fried today. The warmup area @ Venice is actually the Muscle Beach gym. All kind of weirdos working out there and you kind of had to navigate your way around them. Wow no excuses I just came up witha boatload. To be honest this meet was about me breaking the 198 World dead record for the WPF and putting up a 1700+ total @198 or bust. I know records who cares right? Well....me.

I will try to redeem myself in a month or so or @ an SPF meet in July. It was fun.

I don't want to portray it like that because the judging was the same across the board. I thought a few guys kind of got screwed alot worse the maybe I did. Of course you always think your squats are deep enough and of course everybody tells you that you buried them. The cut was tougher then I thought. I was seeing stars and almost passed out on my second squat. As you know missing my squat really sets you up for a poor day. I knew I didn't have 450 in me on the benchI hadn't really trained bench. The 424 flew up and I know I had 435-40 but I tried to make up some ground. By the time I got to deads a 650 pull, which would have been a gimme, would be a waste. I might as well give myself two pulls at the record.

It is a wild story but Venice Beach is a wild place. It would have made a funny episode on a sitcom. Guys running around the outdoor gym (warmup area) in speedos that were way too revealing and all kinds of other bizzare things. It was entertaining but distracting.

I am going to make it up real soon. I know I have 1735+ in me @ 198on the right day.

Was Ron Scott one of the judges? If not, was he around to ask what he thought about your depth? I think he would give you a fair and correct assessment of his opinion.

I was standing right next to the side judge at the USAPL Rhode Island meet this past December and had the exact same view as he did. My training partner's Squat was red lighted and he did bury it.

Not a stupid question. I am retired my wife is active. It used to be just retired and active. I think he opened it up this year to all veterans b/c the turnout is so poor. I think there were still only 24 in the full power even with it opened up to more people.

He wasn't, he gave me whites @ the Cup and the Worlds. He would have definitley passed my squats. One of the problems was there were only 3 judges for most of the meet. I mean a total of 3 so you always had the same 3. I am not sure what they were looking for. There were lots of 1 white 2 reds or 2 whites 1 red. Both my misses I got one white. Oh well it was fun.

That's really cool, I wear into the Army on Wednesday and i've been powerlifting for a while, the fact that there is a meet specifically for the Military really makes me want to hit it hard after boot.

Well no sh!t, I saw you..I was in both full power and push/pull in the 198s! (lifted raw)

I didn't even know I was going to do this meet until about 2 weeks out and I was asked by the Marine Corps Team leader, so in my mind, it was just for fun and to help the Marine Corps Team (which won again). I was definitely NOT ready for this meet, but it worked out.

It was a really long day dude--started at around 10am and didn't leave there till about 7pm. The hot sun felt like it drained a lot of lifter's energy.

Judging was pretty strict, but I also saw several "high" squats that passed. I missed my third attempts on bench and deadlift.

A big puncher once said to me

Steve, if I don't knock the guy out there is a chance they (the judges) could steal it from me.
Ron told me not to do the equivalent in the Squat

Steve, in Powerlifting you don't need to go Ass to Grass in the Squat. You're wasting energy. Just go below parallel.
Too bad judges can steal it from you.

You guys always win. I tried to get a Navy team together but they always wimp out, maybe next year we can give you guys some competition.. This meet really is for fun. I thought I recognized your name but wasn't sure. Thought maybe from another meet. So many times I go up to people and I am wrong on who I thought they were.

There were a couple squats that were high, 2 where the the same person and you know why they passed. I saw your 3rd dead 250 kilos right? The way it came off the deck I thought you had it. Like you said the sun was draining and I think we were all ready to end it. For not being ready you put up a decent raw total. I wish I could say I wasn't ready but I was.

Good luck in the Army, I did 12 years in the Army and 12 in the Navy. Several feds have meets dedicated to the Military. The USAPL does and it seems like usually in FL or TX and RAW Unit is going to be putting one on 9/11 in FL whic will be a good one. But if you are here in Cali this one happens every Memorial Day weekend.

That would be cool. When is your next meet? I am thinking about the CA State Games (USAPL RAW) next month, but can't imagine improving much, if at all, in a months' time.

Yeah, it happens man, and it sucks.

And yeah, I missed on my last attempt at 242.5 kilos, which is a bit less than what I pulled at Military Nationals in 2008 (252.5 kilos).

We'll both get vengeance next time!!

We are moving to Cuba in July so we are getting out of here end of this month. I won't be doing the Ca Games. I would like to b/c it is a really good meet and I like the USAPL. Looks to me that the USAPL dominates FL so that will more then likely be fed of choice for the next 2 years. Hell USAPL dominates everywhere except here in So Cal. Talking about availability of meets.

I am probably going to dead only in Concord end of this month. Missing 665 twice left a sour taste in my mouth, especially being so close. My son and I might do a SPF meet in Branson Mo in July since I will be there. Just a fun meet maybe raw (with wraps).

Good luck @ your next meet I am sure you will rip it up. I know it is hard for you guys to effectively train with all the running you do. Be ready next year to defend that title, for the 5th time. Hopefully he will pick a different venue, maybe Camp Pendleton. Would make alot more since and you guys earned home field advantage.
