Can I learn how to box at one of those boxing focused "fitness" gyms with all of the sloots, or should I look up a real boxing gym?
I want to learn... but the idea of mingling with sloots sounds good too.
Also how does a real boxing gym work? Do I have to pay some guy per lesson? Which I imagine isn't cheap.
Or are there group classes?

Real boxing gyms are normally more expensive. Let's say, maybe $80 - $120 a month.
If you go to those fitness gyms like Title Boxing or whatever, I'm pretty sure they are cheap AF in comparison. Maybe like $30 a month.
If you go the 1-on-1 trainer route, you will spend a lot more than both for private sessions (obviously).
Also, going to a boxing gym doesn't mean you will always get 1-on-1 attention regularly. They might drag you into the group workouts and stuff, but not spend too much time with you each day you're there. It varies depending on the gym. They might be busy with the real fighters in the gym, or they might want you to be consistent and show up before they take time to teach you. For your first week, they might show you some attention since you won't know ****. General rule of thumb is they might step in when you're hitting the bag to talk to you about your technique.
If you really want to learn to box, you're going to have to find a reputable gym nearby and show consistency going regularly every week . You won't learn much from fitness gyms, maybe basic form and technique (but even then, I doubt it will be perfect).
Depending on what state you're in, you'll be luckier than some in terms of finding a gym (and maybe not too expensive). Texas, California, NY all have a lot of boxing gyms (although some are garbage).

Hey OP you definitely want to join a normal boxing gym
Most boxing gyms will have a yearly fee and a monthly fee. It's run as a group class where you do a mix of padwork, bagwork, sparring drills, sparring and strength and conditioning sometimes.
At these fitness gyms the padwork usually isn't up to scratch and you don't do any sparring or sparring drills. Two of the most important parts of boxing
That being said, I'm sure a real boxing class could be run out of a "fitness" boxing gym. It might be worth checking to see if they are running a legit class or not.-Kickboxin' crew-

considering your post is srs
Join an actual boxing gym.
most charge monthly / every 3 months etc. Mine is 60/mo
All classes at boxing gyms are in groups except for private lessons which are more expensive
what do you mean by "mingling with sloots"?
You will need years of serious training to get "good" tho. You planning on competing?
expect to be a punching bag for all the more experienced guys when you start sparring- lord and saviour of the trap

Depends on what your goals really are.
Are you just trying to get in shape, or do you really want to learn how to box?
because if you really want to learn how to box, there are tiers of skills:
-better than the average folks
-amateur boxing
-pro
-best
If you join these boxing gyms, you skill set will be at amateur and pro. It will not be at best because you won't know what is best. I do. The funny thing is, being best is really all about what you know(only a handful of things) and implementing it.
For starters, if your cardio is chit, you won't make it into pro. Good cardio is very hard to achieve and takes a massive amount of discipline.

Thanks for the info. I'm in CA and through my quick half ass search all the gyms that popped up were the fitness type with sloots in Hollywood. I have nothing but time to commit each week.
Thank guys
Thanks dude, I would only compete if I have some talent, but I just want to learn. This is something I've put off for years
That's what I figured

Well thats the point of boxing, to learn how to fight people. If you dont have the courage to spar with somebody else on a similar level of yours, maybe dont try boxing?
Learning to take a punch and recover from it its a part of boxing too. Not everybody can be Mayweather"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

I've been boxing all my life. I've competed at a national level. I trained in old school gyms in Oakland where Andre Ward trained. I trained in SE DC where I was the only white guy. These are the gyms where you can actually improve because coaches wont gas you up and will throw you in there with guys who are trying to hurt you. Right now I'm training in LA at a Hispanic gym. If you want to get good at boxing you have to go to an old school boxing gym. But at your age most trainers wont give you the time of day. Every beginner at my gym does not get any attention from the coach until you show everyday for months and do well in sparring.
They will either one of two things: throw you into sparring very early to see how you react or just let you do whatever you want and not give you any attention. If you go spar early, do well in the sense that you were not afraid and keep coming back then the coaches will start giving you more attention. They are not gonna waste their time and energy on a guy that has no chance at competing on any serious level.Last edited by enzo818; 06-29-2020 at 12:30 PM.
