Accutane - How long does it take to get out of your system?

I just took my last pill of my 8 months, 60 mg/day course of accutane. How long does it take to get out of your system? Also, how long does it take for the negative side effects (dry skin/dry lips) to go away?

edit: One month for dryness to go away? Anyone know how long for sore muscles/joints?

Pretty brutal 8 months lol. Dry skin/lips/eczema 24/7. Kinda had to stop working out cuz joints hurt. Blood work once a month. I drank a lot of water everyday so hopefully my liver goes back to normal soon. Cleaned up my diet a lot to help liver out. Didn't drink alcohol either.

I took it also, works really well. Sides are rough, when they say dry lips, holy **** are they dry. No matter what you do they are always chapped and peeling. Def worth it though. Sides progressively disappear as soon as you stop and should be completely gone within a month,

I believe the half life of isotretinoin is around 20 or so hours, but I'd say the side effects are gone in around 2 weeks-month.

It can take a long time for the side effects to go away because the drug might have been deposited and stored in your fat. I had a ringing in my ear during the entire course and it didn't go away until like 8months after my last pill. I think the side effects (at least for me) was worth making all the zits go away. Accutane completely destroyed most of my sebaceous glands, which is a good thing. Before accutane, I had extremely oily skin. After accutane I had dry skin. No over-production of oil means less clogging. Less Clogging means less zits. I recommend accutane anyone. I didn't have insurance and the cost of doctors visits, cost of drugs, and liver test was too great. I eventually decided to order the drug illegally from Australia, and had it mailed to me. It cost about 100 dollars for a month supply of 20mg/day. I slowly increased my dose to 80 mg/day. I stayed on the course for 6 months. Best thing I ever did. After accutane, I might get ONE small pimple every 2 months.

i just saw a commercial about accutane today. it was one of those "if you've taken accutane, you may be able to sue to get money" type of things, and it said something about accutane recently being withdrawn from the market over something. accutane ****s you up big time. causes crohms disease and some other type of disease.

accutane is an insanly harmful drug. everyone i know who has taken it, there acne has come back. this drug has ruined peoples lives. seriously look to alternatives before taking this drug. i would seriously eat a whole rhino before taking this drug if someone said it cured there acne. try EVERYTHING else first. go to some eastern doctors. statistically they are more popular anyway

Accutane is serious stuff, didn't the FDA recently take it off the market?

I have acne problems, but I also have depression/anxiety problems, so I will never touch that stuff.

I hear it completely changes your body chemistry as well, which is pretty messed up.

It's so irritating to see all the anit-accutane comments on here, especially from those who have NEVER tried it but have only heard about it and probably only bothered to listen to the negative things they've heard from other people like them.

I've been on accutane FOUR times over the course of a decade. I also suffer from depression and to a degree anxiety, but this was bother BEFORE and long after the drug. If anything the accutane HELPED me w/ depression because at least my appearance was one thing I had no longer bringing me down. I never felt it dramatically alter my mood at all. Most likely it's in your head. If you think its going to have that affect, well, self-fulfilling prophecy, it probably will.

I say it takes a month to get out of your system because for girls it is much more difficult to get on the drug due to the pregnancy risks. You are required to take a pregnancy test a month before, every month during and one month after your last dose of accutane. After then it is metabolized out of your system.

Your skin will gradually adjust back to normal. Taking a 'super high' dose doesn't mean it'll necessarily be enough to "knock it out" for good. Age, hormones, diet, and other underlying health issues have a lot more control over that. After you get off accutane and oil production gradually picks up your skin will still be clear... you may eventually get a few break outs here and there, but not as bad as before... down the line years from now it may come back and you may have to do another course if its bad enough to you. Or your body chemistry and hormones may be settled by then and you wont need to do anymore.

And to the idiots that said they've taken it off the market cause its 'so bad'... no, Accutane the brand name is no longer available because there's little money to make in it now since there are a variety of generics. Drugs companies are in it to make money.

Yes, there are side effects that aren't the best. You'll get that w/ any drug. If its not for you then you have the choice not to take it, but stfu for the people that it actually has and will help in the future.

I want to ask you something guys, did you have any breakouts while being on the drug and if you did, when? Did it go like in alternating phases of better-worse?

I've been on the stuff for 3 months now and acne won't budge...and I have cystic acne, exactly what this crap should be about. I got all the side-effects with none of the effects

Thanks for the input. I did have an initial breakout, then it seemed to get better, but got worse again...so when I think about it, it hasn't done anything really in whole 3 months on 80mg/day...doctor says I should just wait, but seeing no results pisses me off.

If your looking for something to reduce scars try Retin-A. It also helps with fine lines and age spots. You have to get a prescription for it. If you have a good medical plan it is covered 100% by insurance. (In Canada anyway)

Keep up with it. It really does work. You may need a stronger dosage.

FDA pulled ROCHE accutane, generics are cheap, still available and do the exact same thing as the brand name.

I think it takes a bit longer to get it completely out of your system. The side effects were gone in less than a month, but I wasn't allowed to donate blood 8 months after I took the last pill. So I guess it takes quite a while for your body to get back to the normal state.

Had to take 50mg/day for 6 month and it was the best decision of my life so far.
