A guy I went to high school with and was on the same baseball team when we were younger died in the gym. It wasn't my gym, but he died on the bench press. I think he was pushing some pretty good weight at the time. He was a good guy. Makes me nervous sometimes to think about. I do have my levels checked, but they don't find everything.
I plan on dieing in my nineties, shot by the jealous husband of a 50 year old MILF right after the act. There could be 5 or 6 ninjas in this room right now.

Non-runner Dies While Not Running
...reminds me of this:
http://rwdaily.runnersworld.com/2008...t-running.html
"I don't get it," said his wife, Bess. "He didn't run all his life. He was always so inactive. And now, this. You just never know, I guess."
"At least he died doing what he loved," she added. "Not running."

Had a guy die on my front lawn while out for a jog. My dad and I tried to save him but he was already blue. They did happen to revive him briefly in the ambulance but he didn't make it. Guy was pretty out of shape, going though a divorce from what I hear and trying to take better care of himself. It was in the middle of summer in NY very hot and he was wearing a full track suit with a sweatshirt.
Very sad

A couple years ago, an older guy was on the treadmill and just dropped. I don't know if he was dead on the spot, but it bothered me that it seemed to take a really long time for anyone to call an ambulance and it also bothered me that trainers who are certified are also supposed to be certified in CPR, yet everyone was bumbling around like idiots and calling for doctors, nurses, or anyone who knew CPR. Um, if you work in a gym, you shoul be required to be CPR-certified, trainer or not. Unfortunately crap like this will happen and people should be prepared. It may have been too late for this man but there will be others.
A friend of ours had a massive heart attack showering in the gym after a workout and was dead before he hit the ground. He was 47 and took pretty good care of himself. Maybe drank more than a person should but ate well, ran, worked out. And he'd had some kind of workup a short time before and was given a clean bill of health. He had a daughter who lived with him and not her mother and came from a very large extremely close-knit family. It was very sad.
Two people died this past year at the Philadelphia Marathon. One was in his early 20's. They both apparently had some kind of congenital heart condition. It's scary - you just never know.Danielle xoxo

Never saw anyone die in a gym but many years ago, a guy about my age--I was in my early twenties--had a stroke just after doing a set of vertical leg presses. He was in good shape, not fat at all, didn't have high blood pressure, and didn't hold his breath while doing the exercise. He seemed to use perfect form. However, after he sat up, the side of his face suddenly sagged and he keeled over. It freaked everyone out so time to call the ambulance. He made it, though, and fortunately, suffered no lasting damage.

Unless it is obvious to anyone who isn't blind that you lift weights, you might still benefit from a little more attention to big basic barbell exercises for enough reps:).

Yes, in fact, and he was relatively young (well, young to me anyway), about 39. He had a congenital defect that he was apparently unaware of and died right on the treadmill, not five feet from me. Aortic aneurysm, and he bled to death internally within just a few seconds. The gym owner was an EMT, worked for the fire department, but there was literally nothing to be done for the poor guy - apparently a hole that large is the end of the line, no matter what.

Sounds like what happened to John Ritter, the aorta just gives way and I don't think even if they were on the table with a great doctor and their chest already open, anything could be done to save them. I know two people with Marfan syndrome and I worry about them a lot.
Never in the gym, I had one die at work right across from me, heart attack, he just dropped and was gone, former military medic was giving CPR and he never responded at all. I also came on the scene when a teenage hiker died on the Appalachian Trail of suspected heat stroke. That one is a really bitter topic, there should have been charges against their adult guides for all that went on surrounding that incident. Now cutting: Got a little more squishy than I wanted, heading down to 160lbs and seeing how things look.

Not that I know of in the gyms I have belonged too. But you guys saying die in the squat rack with xxx pounds on the bar.....don't you realize you'll just give the anti-squatters fodder to outlaw squats or the gyms an excuse to get rid of the racks? If it does happen to you, hope you're near the adductor machine.
Do I even lift?

At my gym in South Africa there was a guy in his early 30's, a Springbok triathlete. South Africa does pretty well globally and he was, I think, second in the country. He was in his prime and as fit as a fiddle with absolutely no problems, or so everyone thought. Well, just before I came to gym that afternoon, I had heard that he had collapsed on the landing up the first flight of two flights of stairs right in front of everyone. He had a heart attack and died instantly without any warning. A country representative in triathlons had a sudden massive heart attack after training and nobody could believe what they had seen..
I just missed it but that was a death at my gym..

Someone drowned in the pool one night a year or so ago at local chain gym here whose initials are AFF.
The night staff was totally irresponsible. One of the night crew spent most of his shift sleeping in a back room instead of minding the gym. So one night, a swimmer had a seizure in the pool and drowned. It was an hour later that someone noticed a body was floating in the water. In all that time, no one bothered to check the pool area.
I think the sleeper guy got fired because we never saw him again."People listen to rich folks. People they pray for poor folks"- John Thompson, long time head basketball coach at Georgetown University.

Hey DaniGirl, seen the same myself - a girl passed out in the gym, and all the well trained staff either looked the other way or did nothing and left the punters to try and revive her!
An update on the guy who died last week after training - it turns out his father passed away at an early age, due to a heart condition, and the dead dudes sister has already undergone heart treatment.
Well theres nobody in my family that has had heart problems so that is a bit of peace of mind.
Like you guys say - get yourself checked out!

At my gym, there are some folks I have wished would die on the spot, but so far, not one of them has.
We have had some interesting blood spots in the squat cage and floor for the last 2-3 years - cleaning crew hasn't seen fit to wipe them up, I guess.
No idea what happened, but I'm thinking about doing my own CSI DNA workup.
I had a box flip on me while I was doing heavy calf raises in college - fell forward and nearly knocked myself out, but that's honestly the worst I've seen.No shoes, no shirt, and I still get service.
