    Optimum raw squat stance?

How much can you raw squat and what stance do you use/believe is best?

I normally squat medium/wide, heels a few inches wider than shoulder width, but it just doesn't feel like a strong movement for me. So I'm thinking of narrowing it a little and seeing how it goes.

This. First I did crappy 1/4 squats I thought were right. Then I tried to mimick super wide stance squats like I saw some elite powerlifters do. After doing some real research and playing around with various techniques, I found that a narrower stance was just easier for me.

Like Torrtrefireto said it can vary you have to find out what works for you. The other thing is the equipment, regular squat rack and wlakout vs a monolift. I find on a walk out I end up taking a more narrow stance, I just can't get the stance wide enouch. Then on the monolift I end up taking a slighlt wider stance and can do better in weights too.
    Good Luck!

I do just slightly wider than shoulder width with my toes pointed out. To each their own... It also depends if the person has to walk the squat out or not. Seems like everyone squatting out of a monolift loves to go super wide even raw.

I've varied a bit.. Worked my stance wider and wider last year, then I did smolov and had to bring it back in because the high volume/high frequency was really taking a toll on my hips.. funny thing is, i found I was stronger with the narrower stance..

670+ with a medium width stance... feet pointed out slightly

    ideal stance width comes down to many factors like ;

    Hip width
    femur length
    shin length
    flexibility
    waist size
    torso length
    bar positioning
    muscular/genetic strong points

ideal from for each person is going to look different. Do not attempt to replicate some one elses form because you like the way it looks.

as you can see its just going to come down to what feels most natural for you. if not using gear... then my opinion is a narrow(er) stance is best. Bring it in, do a couple of squats sessions and see how you feel. Good luck....

Jump off of a bench. Where ever your feet naturally land to brace you for impact is your optimal squat stance.

I did this and it helped me hit a 500@165 sq w/ knee wraps back when i used to actually lift, and didn't just run and tan.

I'll change mine up. For front and zerchers its usually pretty close, for back I tend to go wide but if I start feeling it in my hips (like if I wake up at night from pressure on my femur from sleeping on my side or too much tightness) I might take it in a few inches. It never seems to affect me too much if at all. I raw squat about 450.
    Current Bests (raw/singleply)

    Squat- 435 / 512.5
    Bench- 280 / 308.5
    Deadlift- 495/ 534

    Goals:

    - Squat 500, Bench 325, Deadlift 550 raw at 181-220.

    - Give the recreational bodybuilder thing a solid effort.

I would disagree that indicates the OPTIMAL squat stance. First off, the position you jump from and the position you land from are different - and the position you jump from is normally your strongest position. If you're a narrow squatter, this might give you an indication of where you should position your feet generally, but there are plenty of raw squatters (myself included) who do best from a wide position, and would never, ever land in this position.

It's pretty much all trial and error. You might find something that works now, but that might not be the case a decade from now. It all depends on leverages, strengths, weaknesses, federation rules, etc.
