I am writing a argumentative essay for my English Composition class about whether or not PED's are truly an unfair advantage in professional sports. I have not done enough research to truly formulate a position on either side, because most of my prior knowledge has been based off of local meatheads and ESPN.
I am not even positive im asking the right question.
But what were to happen if you were on a cycle of PED's/Steroids and you did not change your workout to adapt to the increased recovery? Or even if you didnt work at all?
Because I know alot of athletes who take steroids workout substantially more than athletes who do not. Or I may be wrong :/
What Im thinking is that athletes who are on cycles of PED's are in fact harder workers, therefore PED's are not an unfair advantage. I'm not too sure, all i know is that I have a soft spot for athletes who work harder than the next guy, especially ones who accept the risks of PED's just so they can make their legacy.
Thank you in advance for your respectful and helpful comments. Also post any information or websites that would be helpful to my purpose.

well....
IMHO, Your going to have a rough time writing your essay. Steroids 100% give an advantage to those who use them. Try and tell a natural Bodybuilder he doesn't work out as hard a someone on roids because he is smaller. I'm sure he would be pretty pissed. Biologically Steroids give an advantage. No ifs ands or butts about it. Good luck with everything either way though.

You're sort of on the right track.
People on steroids can workout harder and make advancements because the steroids allow them to do so. Natural athletes can't take their bodies to the same limits so they are always at an unfair advantage.
Keep in mind that people on steroids don't always workout hard, they just can workout harder.

Here is another question, do the athletes get "bigger, faster, and stronger." because the PED's automatically make them that way. Or is it because PED's reduce recovery time, therefore increasing the amount of time the athlete has the oppurtunity to workout without risking injury, and thats how they get bigger faster and stronger?
I still have no opinion on the fact so far. Im not leaning one way, im just clearing up somethings i suspect people leave out.I lift for pure pleasure. It's more addicting than Heroin.

You second sentence is what it does. Allows them to workout longer, harder, and recover quicker. This CAN lead to being more injury prone though, aka, the muscle grows too quick and the tendons and ligaments cannot take it.
The guy on PED's is going to recover quicker and be able to push more weight in a shorter amount of time than the guy who is all natural.Krispy Kreme Krew Forever.

Im pretty sure there was a research study comparing people taking steroids and not exercising to people not taking steroids and exercising, and the no-workout steroid group gained more muscle than the group exercising not taking steroids.
Or I could be hallucinating, but im pretty sure I saw this research study somewhere.

I read an article last year, (out of a mag, given to me by my English teacher, so no I cannot find it for your enjoyment), that involved a case study. A man was administered anabolic steroids under doctor supervision. I cannot remember the length of the cycle or the steroids used, but the guy gained 12 pounds of lean muscle WITHOUT ever lifting a single weight. Unfair advantage....yup.

Here is a study:
http://www.ergo-log.com/trainingnosteroids.html
"The – very modest – dose of oxandrolone increased the fat free mass by more than the training did. There is also a tendency for the oxandrolone to increase the muscle mass more than the training did."
Lesson here is:
Steroids > training
Steroids + training = beast mode.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some info on HOW to train while taking anabolic steroids. Right now I'm 6'1", 180 lbs, pretty lean, my max bench is around 275, etc.
I currently work out on a four days on, one off cycle, sometimes I'll go a couple extra days if I feel good, or less if I'm feeling tired or weak. So my question is, how do I work out while on these steroids.
I've seen programs of all kinds, especially in magazines, and I can't really tell which one would best fit my needs. I have plenty of time and would be more than willing to go to the gym twice a day if that's how I'll get the best results. Also, if I am trying to bulk up, should I continue to pretty much stay away from the cardio/abs stuff, or will it not make as much of a difference while I'm on the cycle. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I seen that study and they actually had it n Muscular Development a few years ago but i threw out a bunch of my mags or else id go find it.... i think , but not 100% sure, it was a 16 week study with the non-lifters taking 600mg of Test Enanthate and they wound up gaining more mass the the lifters who took nothingPain is weakness leaving the body........ while bulking i would try to work on high weight and lower reps. 4-6 and try to work out at a super slow tempo do this for 2 weeks then for one day on each body part during the 3rd week use a higher rep lower weight to allow tendons to heal and get stronger.. say 10-12 reps per set. if you are doing proper pct you should remain strong through out, sometimes gain strength during it. you can repeat this lifting cycle during the entire course of your steriods and PCT. you can throw a day of cardio here and there.. just not very often. the biggest thing to make the sustances you take work is the caloric intake factor.. you had better eat!!! dont open your mouth unless your prepared to stuff some grindage in there!!! shoot for 4k-5k calories per day comprised of alot protien and carbs! also copious amounts of healthy fats .. i like fish oil and flax oil, but have also swithed to enova oil for cooking; olive oil for salads tho! GL
OP i remember there was a study in the mid nineties were they gave sendetary men and trained men 600 mgs of test per week and the couch patatoe subjects gained like 6 lbs of lean mass and lost a significant amount of fat, however the subject who trained gained the most and lost the most fat. the moral to the strory was that the theraputic doses of test illicit possitve effects on the body composition while showing a statistically insignifacant change in blood lipid profiles.Last edited by xR1pp3Rx; 05-10-2010 at 06:27 AM.

The thing I'm wondering about in these studies:
have the non lifters taking steroids ever lifted before? maybe the gains would be greater than lifters not taking steroids would act like beginner gains when you first start working out.
take someone who's been lifting a while, put them on a break on a decent dose of test vs someone who never worked out, and then started lifting without steroids. I bet the one who recently started lifting would have made more gains.

you are right...I read the same thing a couple of years ago...I have seen the same studies done on test and Anavar! And the increase in muscle and loss of body fat was not just a little in the non workout group taking steroids...it was a decent amount lol and they kept there diet the same lol...made me sit back and go wow...but I still think, why take them if you are not going to give it all you got with training and diet...but maybe that's just me...
