Hi everybody. I am a long time reader of the bodybuilding.com forums - especially the misc section. You guys have made me both laugh and think seriously for a number of years now. Lately, I have had more time on my hands (a function of being placed in an upper level management position at my place of work) so I thought I would register my own account and share my thoughts on bodybuilding.
First off, let me give you some background on myself. I am a fair amount older than a lot of you and I have been bodybuilding for over two decades now.
In my mid twenties, I was a national level NPC competitor and I came very close to an IFBB pro card on two occasions. As I matured, I realized that
bodybuilding is mutually exclusive with having a functioning, healthy life. You just cannot be a well rounded happy person and be a "successful" bodybuilder." I made the decision that what I wanted in life was children, a job that actually paid money and a functioning family.
There are a lot of misconceptions on this forum in general surrounding the realities of bodybuilding. None of the pros that post here will tell you the truth, and most of the people that have attained some sort of success in bodybulding (be it personal or public) well perpetuate the myths. I am here to give you the straight truth.
1. The whole "1 gram per 1lb of bodyweight" protein rule is not only absurd but has been proven in scientific studies to be physiologically unsound. The only people that can use that much protein are on a combination of hgh, igf, mgf, aas and insulin. Chances are, if you are reading this, you do NOT fit into that category and you should stop eating those absurd diets. They will only make you fat and harm your kidneys.
2. There are no natural bodybuilding champions. I am referring to the ones in the natural federations. The guys that win are on drugs, and half of the time their kidneys and livers are in worse condition than the IFBB guys because they stay on methylated OTC "prohormones" for months.
3. If someone has arms bigger than 16.5-17.0 inches, they are on drugs. I gave a 0.5 inch range here because of height differences. Obviously a guy that is 6'6'' is going to be able to push his arm size out to 17 inches much easier than someone that is 5'9'' but 16.5-17.0 inches is basically the limit here. I see guys that claim natural status saying that have 17 inch arms after 2 years of training and people believe them. Please. if you are truly a natural it will take you a lifetime, with amazing genetics, to get 17 inch arms at 15 percent bodyfat.
4. Bulking/Cutting only works when you use chemicals. It is so depressing to read on these forums of guys who have no desire to compete, who are totally natural and just want to get their arms up to 15 inches being told to eat 4,000 calories per day. The idea of bulking and cutting came about in the 80s when insulin was introduced to the bodybuilding scene and trenbolone became more mainstream. If you just want to get a good beach body, eat 2,000 calories per day and have fun working out 3 days a week.
5. Basically anyone can go pro, as long as they have the right chemical assistance. I see people making comments on how a pro improved his arms or chest and wondering what their workouts are like. Everyone works out the same. Any IFBB Pro works out the same as any 5'10'' 120lb kid in the gym. Its a game of chemicals and with the introduction of peptides, genetic dont even matter.
I hope this post wakes some of you up to the reality of bodybuilding. Stop eating rediculous amounts of food when you are a natural and stop buying into the hype that you can get 18 inch arms without putting a vetinary pharmacy into your bloodstream. In a few years most of you will snap out of the body image disorder and see that you spent the last few years of your life getting fat and doing permanent damage to your heart, kidneys and liver chasing a dream that wont happen.
