im bulking and was wondering how important the macro ratios are? for example, what if someone wanted to bulk at 40% of cals from fats, 40% from protein and 20% from carbs. or 33% all around. what kind of impact would these have? thanks

The macro ratio percentage is really not that important but where those macro's come from is important. Your body really wont care about the percent of protein, percent of carbs, and percent of fat you intake. It will care on the actual number, your bodytype, and activity you put it through.
You want to fuel your body based on what it will ultimately need. First priority is protein. Second is healthy fats. Finally use carbs as a "filler" for the remaining calories.
First just figure out your total calories. Protein aim for 1-1.5g per pound of bodyweight. Fats anywhere from 0.3-0.5 grams per pound of bodyweight (endo-ecto). The remaining with carbs if you prefer and/or even more protein/fat. Maybe want more carbs if involved in a bulk or less if involved in a cut (example). Whatever suits your needs and your goals.
My "ratio" is 40/40/20 but that is just coincidence based on the logic above.Last edited by PBateman2; 04-23-2010 at 09:29 PM.

Like PBateman said, ratio % are irrelevant
1. Figure out calorie need
2. Figure out protein need (1-1.5g/lb) x 4 = calories from protein
3. Figure out fat need (.4-.5g/lb) x 9 = calories from fat
4. Subtract 2 and 3 from 1. Add in whatever you want (probably mostly carbs) to get your remaining calories.Founder of MMDELAD
