what do you think about this deal?

Powertec with lat, Powertec bench and the weight plates are still new.
The guy was asking 1100 and now say he can let it go for 900. what do you think? i offer 800 which I think is a decent deal but he refused and say 900.

In a month when he still has it, offer him $600 as it is not even worth that now and he will still have it then. $900, he's crazy!

you think so? i know bb.com sell the powertec with lat for $750 and 10% off is around $675 shipped. but without the bench and 800 lbs of weights. So im guessing 900 is still too high.

CFF is right, 900 is too high for used equipment.

Anything special about those plates, are they just CAP? If so keep looking, too much money for used stuff...

I think is just a cap brand plates. maybe I should make him a new offer ($650) from my previous offer ($800) lol. Thing is he sound pretty firm on his price too, so i guess this is not a good deal.

If you go with the 50% rule with used fitness equipment, assuming plates were $1/lb, it's worth $737.50.

Still say, $600 or less. Take it from me as 50% of our sales come from used equipment. By the way, if he is that firm, then he will still have it in a month and you offer even less. Let me ask you a question. Do you need it? Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Don't be foolish because the guy is either greedy or stubborn.
Again, let me give you an idea of what a real power rack is worth. We have an Icarain power rack for sale here. Now Icarian is cream of the crop in a commercial enviorment let alone for someones home yet we are only looking for $450 for it and if someone pays cash we would do $400. Now go back to the Powertec rack and ask yourself how much is it really worth. You should go send the guy this thread and get him a clue!

Man, I wish you guys were closer to Canada!
Crazy deals to be had down there compared to what we have to fork over up here.

I agree, $900 is way too much for used stuff down there.....$700 max for that deal.

That's the way to go. Take your time until you you it is a deal you cannot beat! Also, don't go crazy until you are sure you will use the equipment at home. I had about $30k worth of equipment in my own personal gym and I still went to a gym and sold my stuff because I missed the atmosphere. So before you spend a lot of money on equipment, if you have not yet lifted at home, start out small and then grow you home gym. If you have already lifted and know you will use the equipment, then forget what I said and get what you need but at a great price. Again, I can guarantee you that guy will still have his stuff months from now and be beginning you to take it but at the point he is now in your hands and you say, "$500, take it or leave it". LOL

I sent an email to that same seller yesterday. Offered him 450(he said 1100 or OBO). I figured we would meet somewhere around the 500-600 dollar range considering most workout equipment doesn't even hold 50% of its value He sent an email back saying that was an insult and that he refused to respond back to me. I then sent him an email telling that there was no way he was going to get anything near 1100 and that if he checked this website he would see that he would be lucky to get 40% of his original cost. Yet to here a reply. I guess I really pissed him off.

LOL. you from the RTP? I just search for powertec and i saw that he had this listed this weeks ago asking for 1200 obo. I guess no one wanted it so now he lower it to 1100 obo lol. I should've check this forum before I made the $800 offer. Im just gonna take my time and find different deals on craigs.
btw did you see that deal last week about the hex dumbbells from 5-100 lbs with 5 lbs increment with 3 seperate racks for only $350? that was a really sweet deal man.

Yeah I saw that deal. I actually live in Fayetteville but there is never anything good down here. Driving the 45-50 minutes to Raleigh is very worth it. I called but was like an hour too late on that dumbell set. I have a set already and just wanted the 100 pound set and I was gonna turn around and sell it right back for 350 again. I was really only interested in the weights(on this guys deal) and I figured I could have sold the rack really easy. A little while ago I got dumbells w/rack(10-70, and 90), weight tree, 6 45s, and pairs of 35s, 25s, 10s, 5s, and 2.5s with a cheap bench for $200. Sold the cheap bench for 50 and I still think I got an amazing deal.

You have to see it from his perspective too. If you invested $1000+ in equipment, kept it in brand new condition, and then you had to sell it for financial reasons, you wouldn't want to sell it for 40% or less of its original value. Also, I read posts on here all the time of people buying equipment really cheap on Craigslist and then reselling back on Craigs for a much higher price to fund their gym purchases...or even make their equipment free if they flip the items high enough. They talk about buyers being suckers if they pay too much, but sellers are suckers too if they sell to someone dirt cheap who flips the item for a much higher price. So I don't see anything wrong with this seller trying to get as much he can back for it, as that is the same mentality 99% of members on here would have if they were selling it themselves.

    You have a point sir

I try to gradually step my prices down, taking an offer for half of what I have it listed for is just not going to happen. I might end up at that price way down the road, but not before I try to get more outa it lol

Well you can, but this guys perspective is useless. His is still not adjusting to the market. Being a low life, blood sucker (or however you phrased it), I have a good idea what this is worth. I would never expect to get anything near $1100 for that, maybe 300-400 for the rack if you were lucky, and another 300 for the weight if you sold it separately, as a whole maybe $200. 3 months from now when he sells it for less than $800 he'll figure it out. While prices vary across the U.S., I'm sure it can't be too far off, especially if the guy is in a populated enough area for multiple people on this board have seen the listing.

And as to that whole buyers being suckers thing, the general public often thinks these things should be even less than what they are and I'm sure this guy has gotten ridiculously low offers from people who have no intention of flipping the items. CL is a great example of a free market, and with that, prices vary but 99/100 have a set range they will sell for. For example, every time I get a hold of some Hex heads, I list them for .50/lb because I know they will sell for that price in a reasonable time(< 1week, people will have them listed higher and lower than me, people will low ball the crap out of me, but they will sell easily for asking price). If someone listed them for 75% of in store price, they would probably never sell, but if you did get lucky, the amount of time you sat on them would be exponentially greater.

So anyways, my point was this guy is trying to sell his rack for a lot, several hundred dollars more than it's probably worth, i.e. Market Value.

Good post...one more thing to add. Sometimes how you approach sellers about pricing dictates how firm they are. I've sold a ton of stuff...some for deals, some for the high side of market. I have the luxury of being able to sit on things to wait to get the price that I want (i.e Parabody Leg Sled: $650, Parabody Half Rack/IM Bench: $650, Well used Icarian Squt Press: $700). Some of that stuff took me months to sell. Truth is, if you have quality stuff, someone will buy it. RE: approach...when someone approaches me in the wrong way...smart ass, just shooting me an offer for half...I stop just short of ignoring them. If they call me and explain their pricing rationale, I will negotiate if their reasoning is sound. If it is kid, I have even thrown in a few things (like extra plates, bars, etc.).
For the seller in question, you will have to wait him out, but you will also have to approach him with some logical reason as to why he should sell for less. Linking him to this thread now, will likely not help. Given your depiction of your interactions, it will likely piss him off a further entrench him in his pricing. In a few weeks, if he still has the stuff and has had relatively few bites, then send him the link. It'll explain why after all the low-ball offers, he isn't getting any inquiries. If he sells it, then no biggie a better deal is always around the corner.

Case in point, we have a new poster that just recently advertised an IM bench, with 2 attachments for $260...on "OK" price, but a bit high for just a bench, no matter how new. Most good home and even commercial FID benchs around here sell for ~$150. I am actually looking for another IM bench, but for the price she is asking, I'll just get a new one at my local retailer for not much more than that. After posting on the board and rec. feedback, she still posted it for sale at the price. Now she may get it, she may not...but point is, she has in her mind what she thinks its worth. The market will tell her if she is correct.

I understand what you are saying and that is why we sell used equipment as well. As the seller, you should have been smart enough to begin with to buy it at a good price and then plan on keeping it forever. If you don't that is just life. It is no different than buying a car and walking off the lot and having that car drop 2 - 5 thousand. If we tried to sell our equipment for what this guy is asking, we would be out of business and quick. So it is two fold. Buy it cheap and sell it it cheap. If I have a bad buy, I suck it up and accept the loss, but this guy is doing the opposite and sticking it to the buyers.

Your way of dealing here is exactly why I don't deal or talk price other than getting their initial idea until we are face to face, I also find it the right way to do business. I want them to see me and deal with me face to face it's a lot harder to say no in person. Once they have seen me find every scratch in the paint and all the rust spots I will make what I fee is a low fair offer. From there we are off. The key is still being able to walk away even once you made the time to go all the way there. I've been able to do that and so have guys I've wanted to sell to. No skin off we just couldn't agree. I've also sold to guys who couldn't walk away too, thats always nice for the wallet.

If a guy is way out of the ballpark I won't go look though. There are some things not worth my time and dealing with other peoples delusions is one of them.

This is a fantastic strategy that I think would work for you whether you are buying or selling, and should be taught as some sort of course for the regulars here on the Equipment Forum.

I admit that I have a problem walking away once I've made the trip, and I imagine so would the people that step into my garage to buy stuff off of me.

If you show restraint and are willing to walk away (or let someone walk away), you have an amazing upper hand in the negotiation process that will more than likely give you an extremely high success rate when buying and selling.

    Your entire response....

"Yesterday me and a buddy went to pick up the rack anyway since my gym membership expire very soon. He did accept my original $800 offer and gave me his number for me to call. called him right before we head out and I remember asking him twice about the condition of the equipments and he told me that its new and he use it no more than 3 times. We got there and found scratches everywhere, bench had an inch or so cut on the top padding. To make thing short, I respectfully walk away.

Went home and sent him a link to this thread. Honestly didn't think it would upset him, but I received an email later saying something like he can make more money in a year and just throw the thing in the garbage lol. Im just going to keep looking on craigslist for another week or so and If i couldn't find anything good I might just order a new one from here.

Ohh almost forgot, He say that he is a member on this forum and a few others and ask me to 'tell Jimbo I say Yo'.

Wanted to post what you had originally posted, not just to gloat about being right (just poking fun) but as an example of how to approach people (i.e. linking to this thread) and as an example of what buyers should be able to do to get the best deals.

Let me get this straight: everyone in this thread told you that his price was way too high, including $800, and you still went anyways? Why bother asking this forum if it's a good deal if you wouldn't even listen then? Am I missing something?
