Thumbs down Eating for your blood type....

I was wondering if anyone has hear of a diet where you eat certain foods that are best for your blood type?

One of my girlfriends is doing this and it just sounded extremely cheesy to me, but of course I cannot give opinions because I know nothing about it. She's just started it, so we don't know if it works or not.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew of this diet and just how effective it is, or if it's just another "24-hour miracle pill" which had no credence. Because if it is, I'm going to tell her not to waste her time with quickie diets and get her lazy behind to the gym!!!!!!!!!

    Thanx!

I have heard of it, and while it does totally sound a bit cheezier then normal fads it would be interesting to read some of the science behind it. I have heard it is based on your heritage and how certain blood types were mostly carnivores while some were mostly herbavores, although everyone to some degree is an omnivore. It sort of makes sense to me that if, for example some asians ate mostly vegtables while some First Nations ate mostly meat, after thousands of years would your body not adapt to prefer one over the other? Where that leaves the heinz 57s like myself Im not sure.

Im not saying its true or untrue, I just think it would make an interesting read. I am leaning toward "untrue", and the only sure bet is like you said, go to the gym.

Bollocks, IMO. I've not heard anything convincing about this one: just another barmy theory.

Lots of barmy diets have an initial success because the dieter is watching what they eat, their body's on a new range of foods, and so there is a short-term drop in weight. That isn't sustained, because the diet is unsound: the dieter feels that they're just not doing it right, gets depressed, and goes off for a cake binge.

Faddy diets are bollocks and evil. Been there, done that, flirted with eating disorders as a result.

The blood type diet lists certain foods as beneficial, neutral, or negative based on blood type. While I do believe that the foods listed as beneficial definitely are for the blood type, I don't believe that some of the foods listed as negative for a certain blood type are. The blood type diet can work with any diet, it's just a matter of choosing foods that are more beneficial for your blood type.

Thanks for all of your responses.

Seems to me that there truly is no substitute for exercise if you're trying to lose weight in a healthy manner.

And as Sara said, you'll probably just go off and binge again when you see no results.

My friend knows how I feel about all that, I don't even know why she mentioned the fact that she was on that cheesy diet!

I know nothing about the blood-type stuff you're talking about, but I do remember a fellow in the boards mentioning it's a great book and he incorporates it into his diet.

Here's his thread with pics. I dunno - he certainly *looks* like he knows what he's talking about.

I read it, and according to my blood type I should eat mostly vegetables and limit protein. Can't build muscle that way. I tossed the book.

I totally agree. She's also been doing it for about 2 weeks and doesn't seem to be making much progress (maybe also be the fact that she drinks like a fish too!) )

I agree with sara_uk, the concept is bollocks. I've looked over this diet before. The foods they recommend for each blood type would be fine for anyone for the most part. I have seen no scientific findings that point to blood types having an impact on food metabolism.

I could recommend 4 fairly healthy diets and say they each work specifically for A, B, 0, and AB blood types. If you switched from your average american (or british) diet to one of mine you would see improvements, but it would have nothing to do with your blood type. . .

    Hey girls

    Go to www.dolfzine.com

One of the last articles of Dr. Mel Siff was about this eating for your blood type. I am pretty sure he wrote something about it.

Either way he said the whole idea was a fad and a stupid one at that.

Look I looked it up for ya , Im not lazy after all.

Speaking as a Biology Honours Degree holder I can firmly say that this type of diet is complete crap. Your blood group is determined by only 2 genes, but the structure & function of your gastrointestinal tract is governed by the interaction of thousands of genes, there is no scientific basis for this diet in anyway except in the minds of the people making money from it.

    It's Bogus......

So an update on my friend:

After a couple of months of doing this diet, she has now moved on to the Adkins Diet because apparently the blood-type diet didn't work.

I guess I've got my answer right there as well!

    Thanks all!

If by cheesy you mean totally lacking in any real science, you would be correct.
