I'm fixin to be 30 and just tired and bored of my life right now. My job bores me. I really have no friends. I really don't have any hobbies except hanging out with my wife and riding my bike.
I was thinking about joining the ARMY or Navy. In the ARMY I would join as a 15U or 15T-helicopter repairer. In The Navy I would join as an Aviation machinist, same thing but I think you get get put to work on an aricraft of their choice. What I like is the idea of taking those helicopters apart and putting them back together. The other thing is if you are squared away, with both army or navy, you can end up as aircrew flying on the aircraft even manning the guns. Also, I would love to go to sea or just travel, meet people, make new friends, and be proud of myself.
My concerns are on about.com it says for the army they wont except you if you smoked weed over the age of 18. The Navy doesn't say anything about this. I used to smoke weed regularly from 16-19. I have smoked probably 3-4 times since then with the last time being 2002. I think this even DQs me from the army now...? To be aircrew you must pass a security clearance which I believe involves a polygraph test, so its not like I could lie to get in, then tell the truth later.
I'm not gonna 'go down to MEPs to find out' because the way I see it by the time I'm at MEPs, I'm mentally and physically ready to be on my way to Iraq or where ever. I'm not going to get prepared like that, upset my wife, just to find out its a no go. I don't trust recruiters. I had one tell me to "just keep quiet about that" in Louisiana.
I would go infantry and see what I could make out of it but I have a history of cystic acne that I took acutane for back in 2001. If I got hot and sweaty and don't take a shower at least the next day, I'd probably be in trouble, so this is something I'll need a waiver for.
Am I too old to even think about this? Should I even bother? I'm sure there are other people in the military who've smoked weed, right?

I'm 32 and PROUD to be leaving for Ft. Benning in two weeks for Army Infantry. OP, you're not too old. Age gives you life experience and hopefully some wisdom to use in leadership positions.
On the other hand, I understand this is a bodybuilding site, but apparently not everyone does. You'd better be exceptionally fit if you want to be competitive with your younger enlistees, and to have at least some of their respect. If you're a sh*tbag, I would imagine life will be rough.
Reference the reefer, you can get waivers for that. It just makes the process a little more tiresome, but it's worth it, in my opinion. The security clearance might be tough, though. They are weird about things...have a backup rate/MOS in mind that doesn't require one just in case.
Good luck.~ Barefooters Crew ~

The helicopter repairer job would not require a clearance, and that is where I would have to start anyway. To become a crewcheif on a blackhawk or a chinook would be my goal.
I have considered becoming a paramedic before, but the idea of all the fire dept.s taking over kinda put me off.
Anyway, I would be interested to hear any info you are willing to give up regarding your thoughts and goals, and how you came to decide to join up. I see you DEP'd and are obviously in top shape. Your 2 mile time is spot on mate. Anything you are willing to share would be appreciated. If not, good luck!

Good for you OP. Your as old as you feel. I say do it. Then you can look back and know you did it later in life.
One of my greatest regrets was not being able to serve. I had medical issues stopping me however. It was not by choice or my own fault. Its just the way the cards were dealt so to speak.
I say you do it, and enjoy it. Life is too short to wonder about "what if's" later on.
I would choose the Army cause I am not a big boat person. But that's me."The whole swap meet went crazy! I'm sockin more fools than Patrick Swayze."

Ive thought about doing something similar. I turn 30 on friday. I dont even know where the last 10 years of my life went. Ive been doing the same thing day in and day out. Go to work...hit the gym...eat supper...go to bed.....repeat. I feel like Im pretty much letting my life slip by. I wasnt sure what the age limit was for joining the military.

As long as you're honest with the SCBI in the initial interview, you'll be fine. My job required a TS/SCI clearance in the Army and I was candid about my weed usage during the interview. I had no problems (although, it did take a little longer for my clearance to be approved).ʙ ᴜ ᴄ ᴋ ᴇ ʏ ᴇ ✭ ɴ ᴀ ᴛ ɪ ᴏ ɴ

Either one doesn't allow drugs like mj and you'll get tested for them. That being said do you prefer land or water? cause that's pretty much what it all boils down to.

I say go for it. But I hope you'll be ready to take orders from guys alot younger than you. Age means nothing, it's all about rank. I only say that cause a guy at work complains that he's 27 and has 20-21 year olds telling him what to do(i'm AF)"Like everyone else you were born into bondage.
