    The obvious answer is that nobody keeps a billion dollars in cash around, it is put into bonds, equities, funds, real estate, trusts, etc.

    There are actually a few private banks that specialize in very wealthy clients that create a string of connected yet separate bank accounts that each hold $250,000 so each account will be insured for full value.
