U dont need it if u have a decent to good pre-workout meal. It usually takes around 5+ hours for food to digest and its constantly giving ur body nutrition.

I go to the gym after school straight from school, so by the time i'm finished its already 5:30 pm. and i would've had to make a shake at like 7 am and have it sit in my bag for so many hours, while getting warm and stuff

Most people (here and elsewhere) will recommend eating something after working out. Whether this is truly beneficial, I can't back that up with scientific evidence. Common sense tells me eating after a workout is beneficial. I'm starving when I finish my workout. Rational logic says if your hungry, eat.

The above poster says it's more convenient that eating whole food, that is, it's easier/quicker to prepare a shake and take it to the gym than the alternative of a prepared meal. Additionally, liquid is easier for some people to stomach after a hard workout rather then chewing solid food.

Your muscles recovery after a workout is very rapid when nutrients are administered within the first 45 minutes. Scientists have found that 90% of recovery glycogen is directly after a workout and only 10% throughout the resting days. My sources are susan kleiners power eating and nutrient timing.

Within the first 15 minutes after a workout is optimal. Do you mean to tell me that you don't have 4 minutes to drink a protein shake after a workout? or eat a bowl of cereal with some cottage cheese?

from what I have heard your body absords the protein quicker if you take it after your workout.

you should buy a shaker cup, put a scoop of your protein in a ziploc bag and then fill the cup with 6-8 ounces and put the powder and you're set. You can use the water fountain at your gym.

    Agreed.

Also, if you go straight home then you can just make the shake at home. It can be done because I use to workout before my classes and I would shower and everything at the gym. All I would end up doing is bringing my protein in the shaker cup and then mixing with water after my workout.

True, but setting the stage for that to happen is due to proper eating post workout. When you rip appart your muscles and then you don't repair them right away your going to have a lot more muscle damage when you work out those muscles later in the week leading to a smaller gain in muscle.

The study I saw was that when people ate 3 hours fasted after a workout protein synthesis was 300% less than those that ate 15 minutes after a workout. Call me crazy, but thats a massive percentage!

Put the powder in the shaker and leave it and use water from the fountain/tap to mix it, that's what I do anyway.

Makes no difference at all, been there done it. Just eat well and eat food if your hungry. Your body doesnt need a shot of protein straight after a workout. Your body is always processing protein from previous meals etc. Protein manufacturers make you think you need a pre and post workout shake, how else would they sell their products?. I've tried that, made no difference at all, now i just eat food and dont take any supplements including protein shakes. Just a waste of money in my opinion.

Bro, it is obvious that this is a plan, and you have never actually done this. Drinking protein powder that sat out all day in a warm environment is less than pleasant.

I also vote for keeping the powder in the shaker cup all day and then just adding water at the gym.

The post-workout window of opportunity is not immediate as many believe. Assuming that you properly designed your pre-workout nutrition, and that your workout is the standard workout (about an hour or so) you can often go a while on your pre-workout nutrition. This can often allow a trainee to sandwich their workout with whole food meals on both sides (pre and post). However, I am not someone who says that liquid nutrition should never be used. It is great for those in a rush or for convenience sake or when whole food options just aren't available (this is especially true for those who have to take their pre-workout nutrition close to their training (such as first thing in the morning). OP is a student. He didn't really get into his pre-workout meal or whether he has a post workout meal, but if he goes home right after the gym and eats, he probably would not need the shake at all, if he properly designed his pre-workout nutrition. However, I am willing to bet that if OP didn't already figure out to just add the water at the gym, that he probably didn't adequately design his pre-workout nutrition to allow for the post workout meal a little while later.
