Calling out all guys whose squats are significantly stronger than their deadlifts

Not really calling you out. But now that I've got you in here, read through this.

I've been noticing a LOT of people, especially beginning lifters, claiming to have 275+ pound squats and 225+ pound deadlifts, or something around that ratio.

Unless you are incredibly short and stocky and simply do not have a deadlifting build, there is virtually NO WAY that you are squatting that kind of weight with good form when you can't even deadlift it. I understand someone squatting 500+ pounds might have a different issue, but for a beginner I can't see this being possible.

In the past month, three guys have approached me after watching me deadlift, and asked me how I got my deadlift up that high. I realize that 405 isn't a huge number, but it's more than the average gym-goer of my size can lift. I fill people in on the form, and then the question of "how much do you squat?" almost always gets asked. I reply "275x3 at the moment" and people at that point usually reply "Oh, that's strange. I squat that much." I have asked all three people if I could see them squat, and all three have shown me quarter squats.

With that, I've created this thread in the hopes that some of you will re-evaluate your form and stop doing quarter squats. Your ego may suffer, but you'll be much better off in the long-run. All the best.

I hate watching people squat at the gym and they dont even go down anywhere close to parallel they throw 315 and barley even get down at all. All i can do is watch and laugh..... EGO LIFTING >

I was guilty of this when starting out. This is some of the most important advice to a newbie lifter. After ditching my ego and starting from scratch going below parallel my legs have exploded in growth.

Good post... further advice, have a friend, a personal trainer, etc. at the gym watch your form and let you know when you hit parallel (you'd be surprised how many think they are at parallel or below and really aren't even close!). Now that I'm lifting at home, I set up my camera from my cell phone to record my form with squats in order to critigue myself. Amazing at what you can pick out from watching your own form (and I am guilty as well of not hitting parallel on the last few reps of last set but that changes once you see yourself cheating).

Any my deadlifts suck as well but can already tell 1 week into 5x5 program that those will jump the most as they just weren't a big component of previous workouts, if at all. So don't plan on hitting a plateau with deads for a longgg time

Really didn't mean for it to come off as an ego thread. Ahh well.

My deadlift is much higher than my squat. I can currently squat 155 lbs for 8 reps about 5 degress below parallel and about 3 months ago I was deadlifting 245 lbs for 3 reps when I was squatting 145 lbs for 8 reps (10 degrees below parallel ). Currently, instead of conventional deadlifts I do stiff-legged deadlifts with much lighter weight and more reps. My stiff legged deadlift is about as high has my squat. Yesterday I stiff-legged deadlifted 145 lbs for 12 reps.
