    Pre Bed Meal

Im new to lifting, but i understand that nutrition plays a big part in growing.

I was wondering what would make a good pre bed meal, and what your personal favorites are. Thanks

cottage cheese and peanutbutter???? you can actually get that down? i'll try it, but doesnt sound appetizing lol.

the whey and milk sounds a lot easier, and faster to take.

Caisen protien is a good choice before bed, due it being a slow digesting protien source. I often go for a natural peanut butter sandwitch on whole wheat, and large glass a milk before bed.

You'll get use to the taste of cottage cheese after a while bro, just smash em down a few times

Slow digesting proteins before bed (e.g. cottage cheese) are essential to prevent the body entering a catabolic state during sleep.

You will not experience muscle catabolism while you sleep simply because you chose the wrong type of protein before bed.

you can either drink your shake and be bored, or you can make a protein brownie, I just finished mine (whey + water nuke for 1 min) and its just like cake.
    - If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it well enough.

As for my comment, you may like to see Intermittent fasting does not affect whole-body glucose, lipid, or protein metabolism, Maarten R Soeters, et.al Am J Clin Nutr 90: 1244-1251, November 2009 during which subjects underwent periods of 20 hour fasting cycles and exhibited no measurable LBM loss. 20 hours seems to be a lot longer than the average person sleeps.

My opinion is that even if you were concerned, you could just take ANY type of protein before bed (a scoop or two of even WHEY protein powder) and that will provide you with aminos at the beginning of your slumber and further reduce the amount of time you go without protein.

Fine, without using the word that you dislike, I still provided you with quantifiable research specifically addressing lean body mass loss during a certain time period of taking NO protein. You have not provided anything to refute that. You mention "what's been shown to work", well, I just showed you something and you are disregarding it based on what? Someone's anecdotal comments? Just because a bodybuilder takes casein before bed does not mean that he would have lost muscle if he took another type of protein before bed, assuming that his diet is already high in overall protein.

But I always keep an open mind, so if you can show me any evidence supporting your apparent position that you will experience muscle loss if you fail to have casein protein before bed, I would love to see it.

Really?? That sounds really odd. So you just add a scoop or two of whey protein to a bowl, through some water over it and put it in the microwave for a few seconds, doesn't that turn nasty??

there are **** loads of articles going on about how slow digesting protein is better the whey at times of fasting but obviously your going to claim bro science and all the studies have been payed for by companies blah blah blah.

" Casein is considered a "slow" protein. When you consume casein, you will reach a peak in blood amino acids and protein synthesis between 3 to 4 hours.5,12

This peak, however, does not even come close to that of whey. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the highest or fastest), whey would be a 10. Casein would come in with a meager rating of 2.

But, here is the kicker. That is not a bad thing! This, too, is a good thing. Casein dramatically slows the rate of protein breakdown. Remember, muscle growth is dependant on the balance of protein synthesis and breakdown.

So as we can see here, relying on one or the other, and debating which is superior is futile in the hopes to gain the most benefits from them. To tip the scale in your favor, you need to increase protein synthesis and slow down muscle breakdown. You would be a fool to write one off."

that was the first thing that poped into my google search. if you want many many more articles then simply google it.

no im not brain washed by supplement companies. i do not believe you need the massive amounts of protein per lbm of body mass to grow. no i do not believe you need any supplements at all. i do not believes you need 6+ meals a day either. but i do believe that long periods of fasting on a regular basis is negative for muscle grown and repair

I hate drinking casein at night because I'll wake up 4-5 hours later having to piss like crazy, lol.

I also recommend 1/2 - 1 cup of lowfat cottage cheese. Throw in a handfull of almonds and you're good for up to 8-9 hrs.

Having to piss is more likely coming from the amount of liquid you drink with the casein shake, not from the casein itself lol.

not quite, if he is only taking in protein, he isnt going to retain any water--> need to go more than if he adds a TBSP PB or drank the same amount of water and ate a bowl of oatmeal

I am also new to supplements, should I be adding a pre bed snack into my routine? I havent been doing it on my current cut and it is working pretty well. Should I make room in my macros for some Cottage cheese or other snack pre bed?

    Sorry about the thread hijack.

Right now I'm taking 2 scoops of whey before bed since I do not currently have casein protein on me, how much more beneficial would casein be over whey?

I like a grilled chicken fillet with mayo, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, lil paprika, on two slices of toasted bread. Then followed with mixed nuts. Yum.
