Smolov Squat routine - why does it work?

I'm currently playing around with the Smolov Squat routine. I've only done it for a few days and am looking for some input.

What do you think makes it work? I'd like to be able to continue with all of the other exercises and routines that I enjoy and get benefits from. Although I'm early in, my research on it tells me that it can be an all or nothing type of routine. I like the range from Underground/Strongman stuff like tires, sandbags and kettlebells to boxing/cardio and all sorts of functional/bodyweight circuits. The more I learn about why Smolov seems to work so well the more I can try and incorporate it into my own fitness routines rather than have it completely replace them (even if for only 13 weeks).

    Thanks!

I'm guilty of that sh*t too, waiting for somebody to powder my nuts cuz I did 20 reps of whatever the **** on the bench. Big f*king deal. It is all relative." G Diesel

It works because you lift moderately heavy weights using high frequency and volume. You probably don't want to do anything too intense in addition to the program since it could very easily run you into the ground by itself. You should eliminate any conditioning work and other lower body work while using the program so you can recover. I'd keep the upper body lifting simple and maybe scale some variables (frequency, volume, weights used) back just a tad.
