PRs to me are the most weight u push or the most reps u have done at any given weight.
I would term purely weight a PR and if its more reps at a given weight I would say its a 'reps PR'.
Of course I only count reps prs if they are at the higher end of my weight scale. I wouldnt count 30 rep squats at 88 lbs as a new PR for example.

haha, yah it's easy if you have done a given weight/reps before. But for instance, I have done 140 x6 x6 x9, and I have done 150 x8 x3 x3, but never 145 x5 x5 x5 (never loaded 145 ever) or 150 x5 x5 x5....are both of those PRs? At a certain point it's just splitting hairs, and it doesn't matter much because in a weeks time I'll be doing 155x5x5x5 and it won't matter :P

Since you have already done 150x8 I would use that as your bench mark regardless of number of sets. Therefore I wouldnt count 145 or 150x5. You done 8 reps before at that weight so 5 isnt a personal best imo, regardless of the number of sets. But i'd also add in another qualifier, the 'set/rep PR'.
If you were at the top end of your limit, say 200 max. you've got 195x5 x4x3. Next day you get 195x5x4x4. Athough your max rep is 200 I would consider 3RM or 5RM as seperate contstructs. 195 is not a weight PR, but its a 5RM PR, and pretty much all you can do. When you get x5 x4 x4 when your previous best at your 5rm was x5 x4 x3 then youve added an extra rep. Youve done more work and therefore I would see it as a 'rep PR'. You may see it as insignificant being only one rep in a set of 3, but progress is progress, and when your not seeing new PRs x2 per week like you will on SS, or even once per week, then you need those little goals and motivators.
That way has its uses, but its not a good indicator. Look at the 88lbs * 30reps compared to say 264lbs*10reps. Both give a total poundage of 2640lbs. There is no way on earth I would be as pleased with 88*30 than I would with 264*10, never mind the difference between physical benefit. Using this method you open up strength vs hypertrophy vs endurance etc factors.
Glass half empty = "I have failed"
Glass half full = "I didnt get what I wanted but this is the most weight I have pushed and/or for more sets/reps, so its a [pr/rep pr/set/rep pr].woo hoo"
Failing intentions isnt necessarily failing."Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves…" - Dao de Ching

I do see where your coming from, and to me that is one "extreme" as an example, 88 lbs for 30 reps would not be in my program to begin with so I wouldn't be attempting that. Also to the other extreme doing a 1RM max of 300 would be considered a PR to me even though the total volume is less than the 250 @ 15 reps.
I agree with this as you get heavier. But for me right now I'm still in low weights and not accomplishing my goal of 3x5 means I dont get to advance to the higher weight next workout. Once I get high enough that I am planning weekly weight increments instead of workout to workout I will also adopt that mentality.

SS Workout 9
Gym Weight: 176lb
Squats:
45x8
95x8
135x3
155x1
175x5
175x5
175x5 PR
--Add 5lbs
Press:
45x8
65x5
85x1
95x5
95x6
95x5PR
--Add 5lbs. On the second set I was counting and had the sixth rep halfway up before I realized in my head I was saying "six...wait a minute, six?"
BB Bent Rows:
145x5
145x8
145x8
--Add 5lbs
What it is:
Squats: were probably as difficult as last time. Last rep of the last set was a hard rep, but not any harder than last reps at 165 and 170. Depth was deep today, back rounding is still present at the bottom, I'm learning more about stretching, ie I'm not really stretching my hamstrings effectively, so I'm now doing GMs to stretch hams.
While I was doing my squats, there was a group of teenagers who came in and gathered right next to my power rack with a trainer in a big group. They all grabbed a pair of DBs and I was like "oh great they're going to do curlz." Nope, as soon as I was unracking the bar they all started doing 1/2 squats with 20lb DBs. The kid closest to me just stared the whole time and in my head I loled.
Press: These were obviously not super hard since I accidentally did 6 reps on one set, but they weren't easy. I will get 100x5[x3] next time.
Bent Row: If I do these strict, they are a meh. I could squeeze + hold at the top, nice slow descent. If I were to cheat, I could do 20 of them. I'll add reps as I see fit until the weight becomes heavy, though, rather than just keep slapping on weight. Don't want to get out of control right away on the weight.
Overall, today was 11/10 workout. I destroyed my lifts and left the gym feeling like I should scream and push stuff over, flex for everyone, then fight chuck norris while breaking bricks with my cock, eating out your mom, and drinking an ice cold beer all at the same time. Total gym time was like 45 minutes tops. Destroyed.Last edited by pezking7p; 10-05-2010 at 05:45 PM.

I've decided to keep adding 5lbs each workout, but do them strict until I can't anymore. Once I can't do 3x5 strict, I'll start cheating. Shouldn't be more than a few weeks.
hahahaha, the look on the kids face when he saw me hit the bottom of the squat was awesome. I probably shouldn't have looked at him when I squatted, eh?
I forgot to mark PRs! I edited for ReD TeXtSzZZ!1!!. Thanks 4G.Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153427731&page=1

Meh in order to make sure I am noticed I punch the mirrors in my gym til they make my hands bleed, cry really loud about the blood, then proceed to grunt, scream, and shriek at every rep no matter if it is a 1RM or a warm up set..... that way I don't have to look around during the exercise to make sure people are paying attention
You would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.

SS Workout 10
Gym weight: 176
Squats:
180x5
180x5
180x5 PR
--Add 5lbs
Bench:
145x5
145x5
145x5
--add 5lbs
Deadlift:
245x5
--add 10lbs
overall not a bad workout. Might have strained my back tonight doing squats. Skipped treadmill warmup so maybe that. Doesn't feel bad just different. Maybe it's all the squatting. Today was a little harder than last time, last rep
of last set felt like it stopped, but I know it didn't, was just really hard.
Bench was a breeze, but I could definitely feel it in my pecs afterward.
Dead were pretty easy going up, very good speed app the way to lockout.Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153427731&page=1

Thanks. PRs from here one out on all lifts except deadlifts.
That's basically the plan, when I get to a point where I feel like I have 225 I'm going to try it, but hopefully my linear progression holds out until then, seems doubtful given my build/weight, but we'll see. (I'm probably somewhere around 20% BF so I really have a lot less lean mass than you might otherwise think given my frame.)Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153427731&page=1
