I did my 5k yesterday @ 6am. Felt good. 2nd time since January. Bit on the slow side, 30mins (taking it slow first 2 -3 weeks) then hoping to be between 19 - 21 again.

I gotta get my hands on the nike+ again, don't have time. grrr.

My brother recently started to join me on my runs, we are both training for wrestling and we try to get 2-3 miles 4 times a week for now, eventually we will start doing longer distances.

Question i have is regarding knee pain, my brother can barely run without getting horrible pain in his knees. He runs with nike free's 5.0 if the shoe makes any difference. Any tips for knee pain? (he is not fat 150lb 5'4 lean)

Awesome man! When i first started my endurance sucked! Now I am surprised sometimes how far I can get. I swim a lot too, that really helped out.

I tried a pair of 5.0s a few years ago and had the same issue due to the lack of sole cushioning. I recently gave them another shot as a forefoot runner with a more natural gait and now have zero issues. I would recommend to him just to work them into his shoe rotation every 5 runs maybe. If he's a heel striker, have him try a more traditional shoe with some support.

I always run alone. That way I can concentrate without someone yapping about something daft in my ear (I tried running with my sister and my mum and they drove me nuts with their talking lol).

I have taken my kids running, though, the two oldest ones. They really enjoy it but they do tend to get bored because I absolutely refuse to sprint with them.

I mean for motivation, I want to run with a better runner that can really push me. I definitely don't want to chat it up out there.

If I had someone there, I definitely would. I think it's good if you can get someone to push you that little bit further every time, someone you can unconsciously compete with in a way.

Don't you have anyone you could run with?

Nice thing about going 30-40 miles on long runs. No one is willing to go that kind of distance so I'm always alone.

I used to be able to run like 8. Weird that I had better endurance when I was 260+(though i run at a faster pace now). Must be a mental barrier.

Wow man great work. The furthest I've ever done was 16k . I use to do 12km runs 4 - 5 times a week though. Loved it.

Use to run near everyday, have slacked off so trying to get back into it by doing some triathlons later this year and a bike time trial.

Did my second day today although I ran further than first session (one and a half times round my local park...brutal considering it was mostly uphill). I'm aiming to be able to run all the way round non-stop (it's about a mile and a bit). It's not much but I think it's a start.

I quite enjoyed it even though it was hard work, followed it by a few short-distance sprints...and then f*cked my leg up. Groin strain (I wouldn't mind but I'd done a lecture on it just the night before. Typical). Epsom salts in a hot bath sorted it out though (and a massive thank you to whoever recommended it, I feel awesome now lol) luckily.

I have come to a long-term goal decision but I'd like some input on that from the long-distance runners. The London marathon is held every April and is 26.2 miles long so that's my goal for next year but the question is...is it doable considering I can't even run a mile non-stop yet?

Runners world forum has quite a few long term plans that are very doable. The key imo for success would be to not focus on the goal solely though. Doing anything you love in excess always carries the potential for burnout. Stay with a slow progression and just enjoy yourself. This will also keep you injury free.

The couch to 5k plan is the one I'm on at the moment and it recommends upping your mileage by 1/4 a mile per week spread out over three workouts so I thought I'd just continue it at that pace and see how it works out.

I'll definitely have a look, though, thanks.

I'll be dishing out some reps for help tonight, no time right now.

Reading this thread has made me sign-up for a 5k in June. I can already run 1.5-2 miles without to much strain. Legs kill me though need to get some new shoes bad. Maybe a 10k by fall.. that may be to much. Had a small heart attack last August quite a feat if I can do it.. truthfully I feel stronger than before!

You can definitely do it, esmith! Bloody go for it!

I mentioned to my family that I'd like to do a 5k for charity later on in the year. Then they all pissed themselves laughing because they think I won't do it.

    Great...thanks for the support guys...

Actually, I think a bra thats 12 cups too big is more supportive right now. Ugh.

Awesome race. I tried to get in this year but I can't believe how fast it fills up. Do you know if it's consistently full or has slower years like Boston?
