1) read your camera manual inside out.
2) look for ideal places to take a picture from, even if you havent got your camera with you, it'll help you develop an eye for Composition (look for good light, leading lines, foreground/background intrest, distractions etc)MFC

thats not bad for the rebels.. but ive seen better deals on amazon... the rebels take kickass pics. just take all the pcis you can, any angles, lighting ect. ive recently found out that angles can make or break the pic. just take the same pic over and over again with different veiws and angles. it may not look good to your eye, but when you check the pics onm the computer, they will stand out and the ones you thought were going to be good, are bad and vice versa

good advice man. since i started getting into photography i find myself scanning things i see that would make great pictures. I find that some of the best photo opportunity are found when you dont have your camera lol
my LCD screen is damaged on my SD400. I broke it when i was on the ship , it will take pictures but i cant adjust any setting nor see the pics that i do take. Im taking it to go get fixed today, and I may walk out with a DSLR lol.I am currently prepping for a Bodybuilding show, follow my journey :

That's an Rebel XSi, and that's JUST the body only. It doesn't come with a lens.
If you want a starter DSLR, wait for the Rebel T2i to be released here within a few months. If you're impatient, get the Rebel T1i.. it's the newest of the Rebel series JUST BEFORE the T2i is released.
But I'd say wait for the T2i, chock full of newer and better features than the T1i.
EDIT: So what I'm trying to say.. if you're going to get a Rebel, get a Rebel that comes with the kit lens.

a DSLR would help you out alot, I started with a Nikon D50 and when I felt I had the basics in the bag, moved upto a Nikon D200 - I was concerned it was going to be too much camera and I'd find myself confused, but it was'nt like that atall, I'm glad I bought it.
my gear - just incase you like that sort of thing

definately have been thinking about trying to be a combat photographer, I think I'd have a leg up since I'm former Infantry. That would go a long way when you were inbedded.
^^ damn, the chances of that happening.

What stupid advice lol
Why not buy used gear?
Do you have any idea how meticulous people who are serious about photography keep their gear?
They'll knock off hundreds of dollars for a small barely noticeable scuff on the barrel of a lens or something.
Advice when looking for a beginner camera, look for something cheap, read reviews/comparisons.
If you know someone who has a camera ask if you can check it out, see if you like the way it feels in your hands, if you like the button placement etc.
The camera does not make the picture, the photographer does.
Don't be the douche with the $1000 camera who can't shoot for ****.
BTW Cokebaron, nice ****in pics brahhhh.

Best place for used cameras and new as well:
http://www.keh.com/
Best site for learning techniques for beginners:
http://www.morguefile.com/docs/Classroom (look at the right, go through Lessons one by one)
Best site for hosting, sharing, joining photo groups, and expanding your network of photography as well as getting good ideas from exposure to quality photographs.

IMO: best DSLR under 600 is a Nikon D70 with a 18-70 mm lens. Yes the camera is only 6.1 MP but that is plenty.. it is an awesome camera and really has a ton of features that would cost you a bundle nowadays. And plus it shoots amazingly.

Pentax K-X is a good DLSR you can get with a 18-55mm kit lens for under 600.
Small, very compact and light, good for shooting low light situations.
Also, sounds like you guys are looking to save some cash so I'll mention that Pentax lenses are generally cheaper than Nikon/Canon counterparts due to the shake reduction being built into the body itself.
I bought one like a month ago, this is my first DSLR.
I don't have anything to show really yet, haven't gotten around to shooting too much yet.
Here's a couple.
