I love it when peeps tell me that "It's an acquired taste". Which means you have to get used to it. Basically the synapsis in the brain signal the memory that this will make them "feel good" after they have been conditioned to it after drinking on a regular basis. Tthen you develop a taste for it and then a craving for it.

Life if just so much simpler and better without it, IMO.

Everyone told me don't expect it to come back as fast as it did in my 20's...I think I am getting better gains now because my training is focused on heavy and get out rather than go 2+ hours. I am getting proper rest now rather than being out all night at clubs.

I also lost 86lbs once in 90 days when I was 26....people said that was impossible too.

There is no doubt that beer is not good for me. However, there are things far worse part of my life and others they simply overlook.
When you hit your 40s, come back and let us know how you feel about those beers and your will to handle it at your terms and conditions.

In your 20's and 30's anything physical is a piece of cake. Just give it time!

Truer words may have never been written. ^^ The next person I meet who tells me that their life was improved due to alcohol consumption will be the first.

Wish I was persuasive enough to write a post that would convince you to never take a drink. Unfortunately that is not the case. I can tell you from my experience alcohol is a poor choice.

That's in two years. Like I said, people told me I'd slow in my 20's, slow in my 30's, etc.

I think most people's issues are mostly lack of effort and blaming their age or letting things go too far FUBARED to recover.

Probably be easier without the gym as well, but you do that.

It's about moderation though. I don't ever eat sweets or desserts. Some pound them down all the time. I have my few beers and relax.

I never had to 'develop' a taste for it. I like tequila as well, but not cognac. I have no desire to develop a taste for a drink I don't like off the bat.

i quit drinking for 4 1/2 years when i was competing. i felt fantastic & it was a lot eaiser to get cut up.

now, i like a six pack on a fri or sat nite. i totally agree about the sleep and diet getting screwed up. i have a loss of apetite and miss some meals. i think that all work and no play is a bad thing. if you can find a less destructive way to have your fun, fine. i would rather stay home and have sex then drink (or drink and then have sex) but it allways don't work out that way. for me it just knocks me back a step. i get back on the horse, continue forward and do some posive things for my body. i guess my point is, it can slow down your progress some but for me a few beers helps me keep my sanity some times.

This has nothing to do with identifying a drinking problem or not, but merely to get the most out of your workouts when you're older.

15 or 20 years ago, I could go out and get hammered, sleep three hours and get to the gym and squat over 300 pounds. If I went out now, I would be a mess the next day, let alone getting my workout in.

When you even get drunk on weekends, you're sleep and diet routine get all screwed up. Once in a while, everyone needs to have fun. But steady on friday and saturday will catch up to you and you'll find that you're skipping workouts and eating garbage in a diner late at night more often.
    /agreed.

I felt like I was giving back all my gains on the weekend that I did all week. So i tested it. I got blasted on my bday weekend of feb8th, friday night and between now and then i have had 1 other weekend where i had 2-3 drinks.

granted its not a long time but I can already feel the positive effects its having on me and the weekend i feel better rested.

for me, i made a decision what i wanted more and i chose lifestyle change over beers atm. not giving up the weekend night of drinking here and there but i want to get to some of my goals first then enjoy myself a bit.

and the guy drinking a case on the weekend...omg dude. lol. light beer or not its a lot of hollow cals. i went through same thing and just couldnt fit it in my macros. 1 night a week, several beers but 21 beers. omg. lol
Used to be fat, now just fat with a lot of muscle.

Gotta respectfully disagree with this one good sir!

A good Dutch or Belgian beer during summer tastes like gold! I would agree that life is simpler but not better!

This is (more or less) a pointless argument back and forth.

The people who don't drink are going to say alcohol is bad, and those that do are going to talk about the moderation factor and "all work and no play", etc.

(I happen to fall into the latter category, for what it's worth.)

When I stopped working out, I drank a lot more than I would have liked, but now that I am in the gym again 6 days a week I have cut back so much that there is a missing person's poster in the window of the local beer store with my picture on it.

But I am not quitting altogether. IMHO there is not need. My few light beers on Friday & Saturday night just don't affect me. You can disagree if you like, but you won't change my mind. Lisa and I do not go to parties, or clubs, or bars. We don't go to movies or restaurants or sporting events, and save 2 small venue concerts we don't do that scene either. We like to sit home and have a few beers together, and we enjoy it. And I'll be damned if I'm giving up those good times we have together. No making passes at the waitress of the neighbors wife, no drinking and driving, etc. None of that crap. Just a few beers and some good conversation between two people who'd rather be home together than anywhere else in the world.

And if that means (although I doubt it) that I will lift a few pounds less on Saturday morning or weigh a pound or two more than my target body weight, I'm OK with that.

I agree. There are a few bars where I live and the one I have visited (3 times in the past 5 years) most of the guys there are in good shape. It all depends on the people that hang out there.

I think anything over used or misused (that even includes working out) can hurt the body over time.

You can always tell the difference in people who drink and those that do not. Specifically, on middle age and older. The ones that do not drink look younger and have better facial skin tone. The drinkers age faster and look older that they really are. Not to mention they are usually overweight or have a reddish glow to there face. I have been a drinker and a non drinker. There is no comparison between the two. Make mine a natural spring water. Besides Alcohol is a drug. Every sip you take you are ingesting a drug. I do not need a drug to feel good. However to each his own.
Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

I think genetics has more to do with this than anything else.

I've never abstained from drinking alcohol in my life, and yet I have been asked on many occassions if my 19 year old son (almost 20) is my friend or my brother. And I was asked for identification to prove I was of legal drinking age 5 years ago while buying a 6-pack in a grocery store in Arizona. So I'm aging just fine, thanks very much.

The point is, peeps who drink, want to drink! They like to drink! They like the friends they hang out with that drink with them. They don't want to affend family that drinks. It's easire and they like what it does tooooooo them. So they drink. Some drink a little. Most Peeps say moderatly, which means a few days a week to a few beers a night to a night cap, or two every day. And of course there are the ones that drink wine with dinner. Then the unfuctional drunks.

I wasn't around then but it's easy to see a thread like this will never go without argument, hence my post above.

We should all just agree to disagree and move on.

I dunno either, because I live in Canada. I was there on business.

But I laughed at the woman behind the counter and told her how old I was and she said "Well you don't look it, that's why I asked."

Anywho. Not trying to argue. But take a look at my last progress pic and if you tell me I look 42, or older, I will STFU.

Well, OK and I looked at your progress pics and you look a very "WHITE" Canadian that never sees the sun! LOL!

I don't do age guessing very well, yet you surely look wellllll over 21!

Far as your progress pics tho, I do do BF assessments real well and according to your overall goal, "Reduce/Eliminate my Beer belly. Get back to where I was when I stopped working out 6 years ago." I'd say, take your goal makes it clear if you intend to get rid of a "beer belly" ......... get rid of the beer!

In Az its law Flex they will card you if you look like your gggggreat grandfather lol. I used to cashier PT for both Walmart and Walgreens and I would card everyone whether they looked thier age or not. In fact I had to have a guy and his wife escorted out of Walmart by security because they were an older couple buying a 12 pack of beer and 2 bottles of wine for a pool party ( they were friendly and talkative at first till I carded them, then they thru a fit because the guy had an out of state licence and would not sign the book and the woman did not have her purse with her). The Law says you have to have proof of Age to purchase Alcohol in Arizona. So you may look young, but the clerk was doing his or her job lol.

    Understood.

Up here the drinking age is 19, and the rule of thumb is they card you if you look under 25. I couldn't buy alcohol without bringing my ID until I was in my 30's. LOL.

In my first wedding photos I looked like a little kid in a tuxedo.

good call Pops lol. Really and this is fact from 35 on Beer will show no matter what you do. If you want to get lean (really lean ) you got to give up the Beer period. I used to enjoy Bourbon and wine but I have stopped drinking completely since the New Yr. I will not evan have a glass of wine until November and really I am learning to enjoy life without drinking so I may not have that anymore. Since stopping my endurance, stamina, Strength have shot thru the roof and my reaction to my Supplements have been more drastic, and anyways I am finding I am alot happier and am enjoying not putting that poison in my system anymore. Plus its fun now going out and seeing how really stupid people act under the influence.
