Usually the guys in the gym respect it and are impressed. The ones that aren't are just punks anyway. lol Sometimes the not-so-in-shape girls give me dirty looks. But I don't really care what people think, lol. Soak up the ones that praise you and use it for motivation - let the rest slide.

I usually get jokes from the guys (followed by a "seriously though, you look great") and straight up compliments from the girls.
Typical male comments:
"I don't want to make you angry, you look like you could beat me up."
"You're making me feel insecure."
"You need to stop, you lift heavier than I can."
Typical female comments:
"Omg, your arms are ripped."
Women love the arms! Haha, it's always about my arms.
I am definitely proud of what I've accomplished and knowing that others recognize my results is very encouraging

The guys from the gym are always impressed and respectful because I've known them forever. I'm never approached by any men outside the gym. Most of the time they're very quiet and just stare. Women are different though, I constantly get approached by women. The reactions seem to be a combination of impressed, shocked, disgusted and curious all rolled into one. There are no female bb's where I'm from, so it not a look people are used of. They tend to ask a ton of questions and I've lost count of the ones who ask if they can touch me...my arms, shoulders or back...it can be very weird.
About 4 years ago I got a front page spread in the local paper. I was getting ready for 6 shows that year and I was running my business out a new local gym. Right after they ran the article and pics I was bombed by people everywhere I went. I would get stopped at my daughters school, the store, bars, if I went out to dinner, or just walking down the street.
It was always the same thing "Hey, are you the bb chick from the paper?" It got so crazy, I finally started telling people "Nope, it's not me."
From there I would run...National Level Competitor (Female BB)

Luckily I know most of the regulars from my gym and they are all quite nice. Others i dont see much just stare, but they are probably like WTH! lol. They look and then go on with their training.

I remember once a co-worker at a company picnic told me she overheard the guys talking about my arms and how big they are. My arms get big quick. Guess that's a blessing sometimes. Alot of professional and amateur BBs work out in my gym so it's nothing new. One of the girls has nice traps/shoulders so I call her "traps" whenever I see her and she laughs. I think she likes it. I worked my traps two days ago (I plan on having traps like hers) and they are still sore. ha ha

I'd love to get to the point where complete strangers are impressed by my muscles,
They have gotten more visible and noticeably larger since I started, and my family and friends make comments, but not just ANYbody, only people that knew me before (because my arms were quite skinny) so I know I am headed in the right direction at least.. my sister informed me today she's starting to get intimidated !
I go to a just ladies gym and I'd say 95% of the women there do mostly cardio and classes with a bit of light weights on the machines. I mostly have the free weights and the heavier ones to myself so the women kinda look at me oddly when I pick up the biggies off the rack, (Sort of like why is she doing THAT?) but I love it! maybe it will inspire them to do it to, seeing as I am NOT bulky or big and lifting much heavier then they are, and not even close to lifting as heavy as I want to get to. So it will be awesome when I can get freakishly strong to see peoples reactions!

I get mixed reactions, most younger woman (under 25ish) like the look, and most of the "mature" woman seem jelous, either way I', fine with it , and men always seem to say good things ( I get called hot and wistled at alot, which I'm not especially fond of but what can you do)...anyway, being a little mussled does tend to give me boat loads of cofidence and I plan to keep going with it as the only persons opinion that matters to me is mine(and my husbands once in awhile ).

yes..I get "are you a sprinter?" , "what do you eat", "you must workout alot". I have gotten some mean comments like "are you trans?", "do you take steriods?" ..but I just dust my shoulders off. I think people like muscles...they are afraid of the *idea* of muscles, but once they see them on someone feminine it changes their perception. We're trailblazers, ladies

Hubby and I are both in the military, so working out at a base gym I'm not that "unusual". That being said, I'm one of only a couple of women who train like a maniac every morning at crazy hours and I've heard from other people that I'm "known" (probably as "the crazy chick!). On occassion though when we've worked out at a civilian gym when we're out of town or whatever I definately get some strange looks and stares. One time I was doing HHT on the treadmill and I swear they all thought I was nuts....I look like I'm suffering something fierce! Then again...whatever I'm doing in the gym I look like I'm suffering....

Only two guys at my gym have had the balls to talk to me. One asked me about my shoes (Vibram Five Fingers, Google it) and the other asked what I was training for.
The only stranger to comment on my muscles was some creepy accented dude in a Walgreens, and he did it in a way that involved touching my arm and making some reference to (what I assume was) some Eastern European bodybuilding celebrity woman. He very well may have had good intentions, but I was wicked skeeved out.Sketchy Dude Outside Museum: "Yo, I'm selling candy for my basketball team..."
Boyfriend: "No thanks, dude."
SDOM: "You sure you don't want one for the pretty lady?"
Ives: "The pretty lady doesn't eat candy. That's how she got so pretty."

It's been mostly good feedback from men and women. At the gym nods, smiles, a compliment here and there, skinny dudes doing the mirror stare, and of course, "Can you give me a spot?"
Outside it kinda weird. Just 2 of many examples; I've had a random stranger ask me if I could lift him over my head (I'm thinking, just enough to throw you into traffic), and another time I was working in a local nutrition store, answering the questions of 2 middle-aged ladies and from no where one says, "You have great arms," and then 'pinch.' I've only ever had positive comments, and they've generally been in the gym. People generally ask if I'm training for anything specific, to which I answer 'vanity'. The comments from guys are generally about my strength and the comments from females are usually about the aesthetic side. It's always motivational to get some unexpected positive feedback.

Most of the guys at the gym seem cool with it, and genuinely respect me. The ladies on the other hand.....Many of them stare...some of them with curiousity...others I have seen a "ewwww" look on their faces. For the most part it doesn't bother me-though this week there were some young women at the gym that were outright staring at me while I was training. I went to a local supermarket afterwards, and they were there, noticed me...and started staring again. I have to admit that bothered me a little bit. And I'm bothered that it did.
I've had some interesting comments from coworkers....mostly compliments-one older woman told me its a good thing I have hips and a bottom because otherwise I would look "too masculine" from behind...whatever. A clerk in Macy's came up to me and asked me if I went to the gym. When I said yes...she said, "I can tell, you look strong."
Yea-Maybe some people aren't confortable with women with muscles. That's their problem. I am a woman, and this how my body has responded to diet and training....So how is that unfeminine again? Because I'm not a weak stick figured cardio queen??
I like my muscles and worked damn hard for them-**** 'em all I say!Last edited by reboot42; 03-26-2010 at 08:26 AM.

I get asked about my Vibrams all the time . People always think i am wearing socks when i wear them out places.
One guy at work who felt my bicept was like "omg your arms are as big as mine".
My mom always tells me that i look too broad in the shoulders when i am muscular but that is about it.

My arms aren't nearly to the point I'd like them to be, but they're a lot better than most of the other women I see at my gym. (Which should say a lot about my gym..)
I've gotten a few comments from random people at the gym.. Mostly in response to lifts - sometimes in the middle of my lift. Which is wicked distracting when you're moving heavy weights.
"What's that in your shaker? Steroids?"
"Wow. That's strong.. Don't see too many females do that."
"You're a trainer, right?" (I'm not - yet. )
"Man..you're devoted.."
"Yous gonna make all the boys in here drop they weights if you keep lifting like that." (Direct quote.)
Random woman ask me for advice on how to lose the fat on her triceps.
My students make comments about my guns when I wear a shirt with shorter sleeves: "Looks like you gotta a rock under there miss.."
And my friends all make comments and want arms like mine. Again - mine aren't grand and glorious - but better than average I would say.
I like the comments they make. It makes me laugh and makes me feel proud to be different than the rest."If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut." - Albert Einstein

Oooh, I forgot one. I was getting my flu shot and asked my mandatory shot-phobic "any chance I can get this in the glute and not the delt" question (the answer is ALWAYS no ) and the nurse said "Sorry, it has to be the delt, but yours is the nicest one I've injected today!"

I'm back in college right now, and it seems the trend with the vast majority of young girls is to be ridiculously skinny. So, most of them think my entire physique is gross, although they won't say it to my face. I do hear them talk though. Then when they get to know me they act like it's some crazy novelty and want me to flex. lol In the gym it's different. Most of the gals their still aren't a fan of the big muscles, but they want some. I did have one trainer kinda get pissy with me when she kept trying to sell her services/classes and I told her my goal wasn't to "tone" (her word), but to build bigger muscles. However, most folks in the gym are way cool about it.
I'm proud of my muscle, I worked hard for it. I want more of it. I know that most don't like or accept that look and I'm completely OK with that as long as they're respectful.

I do have people stare at my shoulders/arms quite a bit... I do wear halterneck top/dresses to show off my great shoulders! Funnily, they are the thing I hate training the most, but years of swimming has kept them looking awesome...
I have had:
"you will turn into a man if you keep training weights that hard"
"will you loose your boobs"
"men like curvy girls..." yeah that isnt working for me either..
"i bet you are stronger than me" by intimidated male...
"can you spot me?" nicely built male in the gym... why sure sir..... hee hee.

Same here ... the people at the gym are very nice and they will tell me that I look good.. But as soon that I leave the gym people kept saying that i should stop building muscle cause I will look like a man....
It's starting to be very annoying to hear the same comments all the time... And the face that they make when i tell them that I want to compete in a bb ... No one really understand... I love my muscles... and love the feeling of being thights all over... So when i feel like a alien .. I just come on here and see that I'm not alone ...

Not unfeminine, not masculine either, at least no more than a stick figure or a Biggest Loser contestant on Day 1.
Most people uncomfortable with women with muscles are just like you say: stick figures, or so overweight that their body resembles a cube versus an apple or pear anymore.
