    Sick days

I managed to catch the bug going around the office. It's a chest thing, lotta coughing and mild fever. The first day I went to work out as I just had a little cough. It was a decent work out, a little light headed at the very end. Next day was cardio, I skipped it because every time I tried to take a deep breath I ended up in a coughing fit. Last night shoulda been legs, but I was a bit dizzy and still couldn't take a good deep breath and didn't want to end up on the ground with a couple hundred pounds on me. All this plus the fact I don't want to go spreading this crap around to my fellow gym goers. How many days can you miss before you start feeling guilty? I don't like missing work outs, and I feel like a deload week should include light work at the least. I guess the whole dang thing just feels unproductive.

I'm having a bad time with allergies, I was up in a cedar tree Sunday cutting storm damaged branches down and ran into something that triggered a post nasal drip, coughing and a runny nose from hell.

Monday my w/o was off for sure. I skipped Wednesday but will go today and hopefully do better. I did have a cold a few weeks ago, still went although I was probably better off becoming one with the couch and remote.

Sometimes you just have to give in, you could always use a rest day here and there.

its always better to rest then to jump into a workout only to get worse, besides no ones likes watching a sick person cough all over the dumbells there about to pick up!

    Rest, rest, rest.

You'll come back stronger and faster if you take time off.

If you push it when you're sick, you will most likely extend the time your sick for and since you're weaker when you're sick... you are more likely to make a mistake and cause yourself an injury.

Dorian Yates said if he had to do it all again he would have taken more time off to let injuries heal, he said he would have been better and stronger if he did that. (not quite the same as being sick but, similar)

You'll be better off taking a break. Training could lengthen your recovery time.

Last week I woke up on Friday (backday for me) with what was either food poisoning or a 24 hour bug. I couldn't even keep water down. I lost 5 lbs in one day, most of it water Im sure. By Sunday I was back at it working legs. I still felt bad skipping back day but there was no way it was going to happen.
If this were easy, everyone would do it!

Thanks for the reassurance everyone, it felt like the right thing to do. Even though it feels so wrong doing it. I'll continue sleeping in until noon and hope to be back at it next week.

I've always gone with the mantra that if it's in your head continue to workout (sneezing, runny nose, etc). If it's in your chest (coughing, wheezing, mucus) then you're best to lay off for a few days. I have a runny nose and am sneezing this week but workouts have been great

taking a few days off won't hurt, hope you feel better

Rule of thumb is if it an illness from the neck down just rest until your better. If you just had a head cold you can work through it, infact it helped me sweat it out. But if your throat is sore or especially anything on your chest just rest. You'll either make it worse or drag it out for ages. Sometimes you need to take a week off to let your body fully repair itself, so rather than feel guilty think of it as a muscle building week by sitting on your arse.

Yeah, that's what I had read back when I had a head cold a couple of months back and I actually felt better after a good work out.

I'm not sure what's worse, watching the sick guy use the dumb bells, or seeing the guy you just saw skip washing his hands after coming out of the ****ter grab the dumb bells you need for your next set. True story, yuk!

I used to stubbornly go to the gym no matter what. Of late I have learned that I will recover faster and suffer lees severely if I just get some rest. Working out taxes the immune system as well as the system and your body is not like the government, you cant profit from a double tax. Eat normally , get plenty of rest and stay hydrated that will minimize the setback.

I got a cold in early December and didn't think it was bad enough to stop working out for but in a couple of weeks it hadn't gone away. It turned into a sinus infection and I've just started my 4th antibiotic and have missed countless weeks in the gym because every time I go, I get much worse. Don't chance it, it's not worth the chance you'll end up sick enough to lay you out for weeks or more. If you'd have told me 4 months ago that I'd be out of the gym for the most part for 4 months I'd have told you that you were crazy. I haven't missed more than a week or two for illness or vacation in 25 years.

Do everyone including yourself a favor and stay home til you get better. Some biatch came to work sick as a dog. Days later, I ended up sick the day before my two week vacation started. Two weeks down the pi**er because someone could not stay home for a few days. She was a smoker also. duh! Even when I smoked, if I got sick, I stopped long enough to get better because at the time I couldn't wait to be able to smoke again.

I don't know what the hell got hold of me, or if I caught something else while my immunities were down. But, my cough was getting better last Monday when I started to feel a bit nauseous. I skipped the gym Monday night as I thought sure I was gonna lose it. I pretty much had to force dinner down. Tuesday I still had trouble eating, not really sick sick, just wasn't hungry and anytime I ate it took some time to settle. Tuesday night I had to leave work early, I never do that. I got home just in time for the flood gates to open. I don't think anything I ate between Monday and Tuesday got past the stomach. I laid in bed for 2 days after that with no real interest in food. Finally got to the point where I could do some tomato soup and a piece of toast. I can finally eat a days worth of food, and will be back at it Monday. I feel like I lost muscle over the last 2 weeks, but I hope that's just in my head. I did drop a couple more pounds than I should have, probably water weight as my water consumption was down. What a waste of 2 weeks.
