Cutting means being on a calorie deficient diet in order to lose fat.

Bulking means being on a calorie surplus diet in order to gain muscle (and fat).

People will usually cut after bulking in order to lean out and show off their sexy new muscles. It's a cycle: Bulk->Cut->Bulk->Cut->etc.
    Is breá liom mo eagla.

bulking is a phase used for maximal muscle gain/minimal fat gain, so normally you would eat a caloric surplus 500-1000 calories greater than your total calories burned off each day.

cutting is a phase used for maximal fat loss/minimal muscle loss, so normally you eat a caloric deficit 500-1000 calories less than you burn off each day.

it's tricky to do both at the same time, because these 2 things kind of require the opposite approaches. i.e., gaining muscle normally means you need to be eating more to feed the muscles, and normally you will not lose fat when eating more. also, insulin can play a role, where it can be used to gain muscle (as it is an anabolic hormone) but at the same time, it can also put on unwanted fat. when insulin is high, it has an anabolic effect (but can also cause fat gain from insulin spikes). keeping insulin levels stable can minimize fat gain (lowering carbs when cutting).

so basically, these 2 phases have 2 different focuses, since it is difficult to do at the same time, because they contradict each other. you could do them at the same time, but it would be much slower, and counteracting.

Why bump? the first guy answered your question.

Bulk- Eat lots of food and lift weights to gain muscle.

Cut- Eat under maintenance to lose fat.

A proper bulk is eating over 1000 calories more than maintenance to gain weight as fast as possible and cutting is eating under maintenance to lose fat, goal being to preserve as much muscle as possible.

Personally I think proper bulking is a total waste of time if your a natural trainee, you will just turn into a fatass. 500 calories over maintenance is not even bulking, without those calories weight gain would be so slow and and you wouldn't gain at a decent rate anyway, so stop thinking bulk and just get a solid diet that is easy to follow.

I would only ever eat that far over maintenance and take the fat gains if I was using performance enhancers so that the fat gain is made up by decent gains in muscle, people think they gain tonnes of muscle when they get all fat and bulked up, then they cut and look exactly the same as before because they don't know how to diet properly. Just find a diet that allows for the best lbm gains over fat gains as a natural trainee, which is not 'bulking'.
    1k+ people.
