Area 51, or a an airport where you can find a pilot to fly you and your friends to some faraway country where the disease hasn't spread yet. Maybe a small private plane.
✔ I always rep back 1k+. Just ask, I will find you...and I will rep you...

Would depend on the type of zombie.
There are 2 types scientifically possible.
1. Virally infected: Slow moving zombies. Slow metabolism so they live for a really really long time. However these zombies would not be able to go to sub zero areas because they would freeze.
2. Virally infected: Fast moving zombies. Would live for not as long since they would have to retain some metabolic activity in order to be able to sustain the muscle contractions required to sprint. They would also be able to survive lower temperatures... even lower if they were wearing winter gear since their bodies produce heat.
The slow zombies would probably float temporarily because of the gasses produced when you die. The faster zombies would probably sink because they still retain many of the physiologic processes involved in sustaining "life."
Also depends on the way the disease is spread... is it airborne? Bite only? Are animals infected?
I think an island fortress like alcatraz would be best... plant crops on the surrounding area and retreat to the fortress at night/when under attack. Make trips to the main land to resupply. Create a condensation based water desalination system. (no electricity required)
I think the more interesting topic of discussion is after you have established a small community... how will the community be governed? Will the people with guns form the ruling body? Will the "citizens" try to create a checked and balanced government? Monarchy?Last edited by AphtaLyfe; 03-21-2010 at 12:08 PM.

One of those pyramids in the Amazon
It's in the middle of nowhere so zombies aren't going to go walking through miles of tropical jungle
It's surrounded by a jungle full of food and water
It's got some thick walls so if you do get over run you could chill inside with only one way in and just kill the zombies as they come.

that famous prison by san fransisco.....the one out of "The Rock"? forgot its name, alcatraz?
that would be the ideal location to harbour..... it has enough size to do all the necessary things such as:
-house population
-recreation
-training areas such as setup shooting ranges
-its not on the mainland meaning zero zombie contact
-its not too far away from the mainland for you to sail to or fly to for supplys or search & rescue
so that would be the ideal location for me.
but if that is to diffuclt to get too, i would stick to the british country side and take a castle on a hill, you can easily spot incoming waves and you can setup barbed wire or landmines and visibily see where the weak points in your defences are.
oh and yes i have it all planned out, you never know when **** might get real.
another tip would be to buy simple house alarms but put them in for every room, soon as it trips, you have an alert, you could do it so that if the motion sensor is tripped, the room is sealed, cctv in that room could then be quickly checked to see if it wasnt just a friendly or not...
fuk yeh im good

Super max prison
How about a supermax prison with multiple barbed wire fences and towers. As long as it is cleared out you have enough room for animals to graze if you can get some or plant a garden.
Yeah, I'm old, been here for years before posting. Son posts as well.

I would probably try to bunker up near or in a hospital. I would wait it out and see how things go.
If the current city I am in is completely screwed, and so are other decent size cities, I will decide that humans lost and zombies won.
I can't imagine zombies being very smart, so I would capture one. Being in a hospital, I would have access to life-support systems.
I would inject myself with the zombie dna while being hooked up to life-support.
The theory is that the zombies have only basic functions because between the time that they die and "re-awaken", their brain doesn't get enough oxygen, thus killing a lot of it.
If I can keep my brain intact while being turned into a zombie, I could potentially be a zombie with actual thought.

Wtf lol you seem to be disregarding the issue of security unless your college campuses are locked down or something?
College campus seems pleasant until they climb over the gates...
Aircraft carrier must be the best. No way they can get to it from the land, if they can swim they cannot climb it and will be drawn under by the current, you are immune. Plus they run on nuclear power so you never need to refuel, and all your food+water can come from the sea.

I'd just like to say, because every zombie thread has some douche who comes in and accuses everyone of taking it too seriously, that zombie discussion is an awesome metaphor for serious survival discussion.
Zombies may never happen, but sht can and does hit the fan, like urban unrest, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, rioting, terrorist attacks etc.
What were doing here is taking a zombie apocalypse as a metaphor for fun discussion, and projecting that towards what could actually happen....because if youre ready for zombies, youre ready for anything.
There are still alot of scenarios that can realistically happn in real life, and you may need to pack up and GTFO of dodge.....if thats the case....wouldnt you be glad you were privy to the advice of your zombie brothers on the misc?
btw, aircraft carriers and oil rigs still sound like the best option, but youre gonna need some crew who have stayed behind that can operate it. If anyone on the ships or rigs watches zombie movies, theyll probably realise going back to the shore is suicide and stay put.Last edited by lucious; 03-21-2010 at 08:02 PM.

S'more:
Shutter Island: Whoever mentioned this one, reps to you. An island, secure facilities, and jagged, steep cliffs with only one dock to enter from. Havent seen the movie but how far is it from shore? If its over a dozen miles this is another perfect hideout. Shutter Island may be fictional but I know of a few mental institutions that are on islands at sea.
Hatch on Lost: Another winner here. Island in the pacific, remote, tropical, plus its an underground sealed bunker with luxurious living quarters and supplies. It even has guns. Provided you dont have to push that button every 108 minutes, you could live here for decades and no zombie would ever find you. Even in the incredibly improbable event a zombe washed up on shore, it could never find the hatch or get in.
Lighthouse: Not the ultimate hideout, but certainly feasible and easy to get to. Most are at sea, elevated with only one entrance. Perfect short term refuge until you find something better. Though lighthouses usually look fairly small so getting restless might be an issue.
For the record, the following facts might come in handy:
-Zombies cant swim, only float on currents
-Were dealing with humans turned zombie here, from viruses etc. No walking corpses, but infected humans that run.
-Animals can contract the virus too.
-If you're in a position where yourea bout to get eaten by a shark, it wont matter at this stage whether or not its a zombie.
-They dont have any superhuman abilities. Anythign a human cant do, a zombie cant do. This means climbing vertical surfaces, or hiking up a frozen mountain.Nov 04-fatass @40%bf
