Currently i workout 4 times a week, squatting on mon/ thur and deadlifing on tue/ fri. However, when i get to my next squat/ deadlifting session im often still sore and cant lift as well as my last workout. Does this mean i should squat ans deadlift only once a week?

How long have you been lifting? Many beginners experience initial DOMS, (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) which goes away after a week or two.
People on Rippetoe'se squat 3x/week, and deadlift 2x/week every other week."Complexity for complexity's sake is dumb. Slow progress when fast is available is very poor decision making. Training indirectly with elaborate assistance exercises to raise your back squat is foolish if you can walk in the gym and add weight to your back squat."

Definitely wouldn't do squat/deadlift/squat/deadlift.. Pretty stupid because a lot of the same muscles are used in squatting and deadlifting..
I'm guessing you're on a 4 day split or something.. I would either squat then deadlift on the 1st day, then on the 4th day I would do deadlifts then squats, if you catch my drift? Or just do them once a week, as far apart as possible. Up to you!

I would say 2x heavy at the most, maybe 3x, it really depends on the type of routine you're on, but 4x a week is stupid

Beginners can squat 2x/week. Everyone else should be looking at 1x/week.
I would never deadlift more than once a week. Some guys only deadlift once every two weeks, some guys DL from the floor less frequently than that.
IMO, if you think you can successfully DL more than once a week, work harder the first time.PRs:
Squat: 672 lbs
Bench Press: 446 lbs
Deadlift: 696 lbs
Press: 265 lbs
