    how do deadlifts build biceps?

i'm curious as to learn how deadlifts and squats can build bigger arms? i did deadlifts for the first time ever this week, and my mid to lower back in on fire now, but my arms feel nothing. can anyone explain this to me?

i know biceps are a secondary muscle to back exercises, but deadlifts are just bending over and standing up. and how can squats build bigger arms too? someone set me straight here please.

im not sure if its true or not, but i'll explain what I know... They allege that the act of doing squats ups your hormones you produce. That is how it affects your upper body. Not the lift..

Ok now.. if you arms were sore, you would have done the exercise wrong. Your arms are supposed to be locked out. If you try to deadlift alot of weight with your bicep involved you might tear it. You will get a forearm workout, thats about it for arms.

    isometrically?

kinda like how standing straight arm pull downs hit the triceps.

they dont directy work your biceps what so ever .... but by increasing the strength in the rest of your body you are increasing the limits that your biceps alone will have.

and i think someone already said the thing about squats (legs in general) increase hormone levels but that + same as above increase the hormone levels and overall strength leads to a higher capacity

    they dont

the increase in hormone levels from doing compound exercises is negligible. if you want big arms, work your arms.

    Talking

Actually I can of disagree with most answers deadlifts can have an effect o biceps other than producing high level testosterones. By using a mix grip an alternating arms will actually work the bicep since majority pulling exercises usually stimulate biceps and also I heard people who usually use mix grips sometimes get bicep tears. So by using a mix grip and doing a 4x4 would be great for biceps but remember to alternate the grip. But I wouldn't count on it to build size . To build size I would use dumbbells curls or hammer curls 4 set of 15 using fast positives 2 second static holds and going about 3 times slower on your negative than your positive . Like I used to see a guy who had some very large arms who used to a partner who never used the positive part of curl he had his partner push his arms up he would hold it for the static 2 seconds and slowly lower it he told me to build huge muscles always focus on the negative and static hold( contraction of the muscle)

Dead lifts don't work biceps but they work the forearms. It's call isometrics. Look up the word if you don't know what that is.

i heard the other day from a trainer that doing back doesn't directly make your ams bigger. he said what happens, is that doing back makes your posture better. and when your posture improves it gives the illusion that it made some other muscle groups bigger.

ou say you are benching,if so at what intensity?,what sort of rep range are you using?.Are you doing any other compound movements like squats and deadlifts, and training heavy on them?.Never do conventional pyramid training, why people train like this is beyond me,it does not make sense, why tire your muscles out before hitting your heaviest weights,so after a couple of light warm up sets, hit your maximum poundages first, while you are fresh, dropping the weight a pound or to on each set, just enough for you to maintain the same amount of reps on your next set,so training REVERSE PYRAMID!.Stop wasting time on smaller isolation movements, they won't make you grow, although if you enjoy doing certain ones, keep them to the end of your workout. Also eat plenty of carbs and healthy fats in your diet as well.I have used this formula on all my clients looking to build muscle mass in the last 13 years, and they have all made considerable gains,so it WILL work for you if you do it right!

Something to do with isometric contractions I suppose.

Back exercises leave my biceps fatigued and pumped so they do work them. Chins, Rows for sure.

You mean a successful method of body building that countless body builders have used to build physiques for decades?

Never do that? What were they thinking?

Of course, if those back exercises are rows and pullups, and especially chinups. But not deadlifts.

You can't do rows or chins without contracting your biceps. If you were referring to deadlifts, then of course you're right.
