Very good indeed, he's one of my favourite Boks.

He's literally like a bull, that runs pretty fast.

190kg sounds about right, he backed into me and it was like I was trying to push a wall.

so this week we were sans-hookers and only had 15 guys travel (we only have about 18-19 guys either way). coach switched me from 7 to hooker. i'm stoked to say we didn't lose a single scrum on our put-in. having never done it before, it was quite the experience.

i also scored my FIRST try ever. it was an awesome feeling. there was a little slop in the center and i scooped it up about 30 meters out, broke a tackle and touched it down between the posts. we ended up losing but i felt like i played a great game aside from having a minor hammy pull.

it sounds like everybody was pretty happy with my performance and they want me to start playing 2 more often (the other hookers are 37 and 44 yrs old, we're a small mens club). does anybody have any good videos or articles on the TECHNIQUE of hooking in the scrum? i looked all over youtube and couldn't find anything...

Well I can squat 185kg for single so no doubt he can do 190kg for reps,

On the super14 note, damn I have been impressed with the Stormers Lock Andreas Becker, monster dude at 6'10 123kg's, dude can side step and has good pace too.

best way to move up is to hang around and make yourself available for reserving for higher grades. good move (and yes, playing in the ****ing heat at 2-3pm is horrible)

Talk about great timing, this thread is exactly what I needed. Kinda long post, but I'm a little clueless right now.

Used to play pickup games during college about 6 years ago. Totally stopped after that, playing about 1 game a year not to mention adding on an extra 20-30 lbs.

Recently I've started hitting the gym for 3-4 months and started playing pickup games again. Problem is, I have the stamina but not the hand-eye coordination and body control. I can't reach for the highest point during rebounds, and alot of times when I jump I don't actually reach my max vertical. It's like mentally I still remember what to do on the court, but physically I'm just too clumsy/slow/untrained to actually do it.

What would be a good training/drill to work on that? Simply playing more games? Some kind of conditioning/endurance training in the gym? Or some drills that simulate in-game situations?

i also had another wee run at hooker yesterday got about 10mins there as our starting hooker decided to sub himself. i only had one scrum and yet again i missed my hook and left the ball for my tighthead as i just like the scrumaging part of hooking and go for the power over the ball instead of hook it tactic seems to work. wasn't having the best of days at losehead although i did managed to get thier starting tighthead subbed after 3 scrums and i couldn't get away with anything at scrum time as the ref kept blaming the flankers for wheeling the scrum......the flankers.

was also quite a hot day yesterday....well for us but i doubt it was anything near 35 deegrees tho. 3 games left of my season, so ill need to get cracking on my off/pre-season planning. might actually get an off season this year but it depends on how tempted or bothered i can be with playing 7s.
people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day

Today I was playing tighthead and the loosehead was getting his head under my chest and pushing me up. When we engaged he wouldn't hold the shove then slipped under my shoulder to my chest. If I pressed him on the engage the ref would penalize us for not holding the shove. I can't push him down as our hooker swings of the prop and hooks with both feet - and he'll come off worse if it collapses. How can I deal with someone doing this?

pretty clever losehead play..... you could allways close the gap and control the hit and hit him out so he can't get under you or hit in on his hooker.

At first I thought it was bbecause of how hard I dunk it ( Im a power dunker), but when I softened the dunk I got the same result. I experimented with grabbing the rim after I put the ball in, but it is to soft looking and appears to be a lay up with me touching the rim. Do you have any advice.
I used to have the same problem. Since your saying you have the vert to dunk, concentrate on going up with two hands and then at the last second throw it down with one hand. Also, make sure your taking off far enough away from the rim. Make sure your at your highest point before you actually try to throw it down. Actually finishing is the hardest part. It took me months to get from the point where I would clank every attempt to where I could dunk cleanly. Just keep practicing and it'll happen though.

I think hand-eye coordination comes back after a little while, may never be once what it was, but it takes practice like anything else. I would suggest jumping rope for the situation that you are in.

As far as jumping for rebounds and what not, I believe that will come with being on the court. Can't really relate or have heard of that before, but it is as you say a mental thing.

I would increase cardio, as it can never hurt. Without question keep playing more and more games, doesn't matter with people older or younger; you will get a different feel with different levels of talent.

I think rebounding is more about having a feel for the shot and where it is going rather than timing.

Look at this chart I uploaded to get an idea what I mean.

Make sure your positioning is key and have the will to battle the opposition. Rebounding is about wanting it more than the other guy.

Yeah, by the end of the game I ended up closing the gap so our heads touched just before the engage which just about worked. It sucks playing against technical players.

I don't like going in on peoples hookers - the last time I did it when the sub hooker came on he kneed me in the face and ****ed my lips up.

argh didnt even take notice of this thread until now!!

So anyway long story short, rugby has always been the thing i've been best at my whole life. my career has been riddled with injuries (mainly my knees). I have played quite high level rugby, representing the state when i was 16/17(had my knee reco at 17)

After a dissapointing season last year (grade 2 MCL in the 2nd round of the comp), I had been doing a lot of thinking on whether or not to play in the 2010 season. About 2 weeks ago I decided it was now or never and started training, albeit quite a few weeks late haha.

Couldn't play in the first trial due to work committments, but played on the weekendin the blistering heat. Ended up playing all of 4ths and a half of 3rds. Glad to see my knees and body for that fact held up quite well except for the extreme stiffness sunday morning haha.

I've given myself the goal to get on tv playing rugby this year, which looks like my best chance in doing so will be playing for 2nds and backing up for 1st.

I plan to give myself the best opportunity to do so by training harder and more consistently both in rugby and outside of rugby, as well as improving my nutrition.

And for those wondering, I'm playing with Eastwood (as I always have).

Good luck to those also playing this season!! and go the Hurricanes and All Blacks!!

Eastwood is in Sydney, NSW. Would be considered a western sydney team.

but yeah, I haven't been to lucky with my knee's.
05 tore ACL, + grade 2 MCL leading to a knee reco
06 took this season off to strengthen my legs
07 did grade 2 PCL, but finished the season
08 took the year off as PCL was still giving me problems, and was also studying
09 did a grade 2 MCL second round which took a long time to heal (same leg as knee reco)
10 still alive, as yet. haha

Add me on the list for hooker techniques... So far after two games that the position I've played the most, before this season I played it only when our hooker had to leave due to injury or getting carded.

Does anyone know the actual ruling in USA College for not releasing? I got penalized for it last week, I was in the bottom of the ruck just holding on the ball with my fingertips, arm fully extended, just to hold it still for the scrum half. I thought this was legal?

I also got called for diving over, we were receiving a kickoff, they did a kick where it rolls along the ground and they have someone dive for the ball as soon as it goes 10m. not wanting to kick/knee the opposing player in the face (well, I wanted to, but that's a diff. story) and already bent over ready to make a tackle, I just dove over him, no other players near us. I probably shouldn't have said "That's so ****ing busch league" as I was walking away, either.

Just make sure you keep your hand on top of the ball. I have small hands and can't palm the ball, but i can get up high enough to keep my hand on top of the ball and can throw down hard.

Hey, I recently join this forum and I absolutely love basketball. It's fun mentally, physically and emotionally. I've been playing this for a few years(I'm a late bloomer), i first started for fun now I play a little more competitive like in league/tournaments and stuff.

Is this the right place to add what kind of work out you would recommend me to do here? I've been working out with my friend but his work out is long hours and it drains me out in every way possible and I don't like it and he doesn't even play basketball. I only have 3 days a week to work out too and I don't want to always spend like 2-3 hours there, even though my gym is packed at the hours I go my friend literally does every machine and he makes me do it with him 3x30-50 (increase 10 per week at 25% weight) and then after 3 weeks we do 5x5-10(at max weight)

Thanks for the advice I had been struggling for months trying to figure it out. I even thought that trying 2 handed would change it but it never worked. I'll try your advice next time I go to the gym

Is this for me? because you quoted the rebounding one.
    I'm not a skinny guy though, I'm kinda big like 215-220 6'2-3 with a belly, I play F/C though.

Sorry about that, yes it was meant for you. Skinny or not, won't matter. Will make you stronger and more explosive while increasing your main lifts.
