After reading a good amount in this thread I just thought I should post my own personal records.

I started outdoor year of 11th grade. My first throw was 28.2, this was also the first time I touched a shot put, I had no coaching either. I ended the year with 38'. I went to a summer camp for a few days to learn how to spin. I tried spinning and it wasn't very useful, so I switched to glide during the outdoor season.I started around 40' ended about 45'. Got a private coach over the summer, helped amazingly. Went to college and threw last year with the 16, again no coaching, hit 46'. I'm a glider, I also did discus, wasn't my thing though. I went from 80' to 120' by senior year. I wish I did start it earlier, 9th grade or sooner, but whatever, it was just my motivation for working harder.

As for you gaining 2-5 feet. You just need to work on your form, and that will help you. In hs I had no coach to help me, we just did everything on our own. I worked out when I could, but form and correct practice is what you need. Try to use a video camera and record yourself. Watch youtube videos, and try to perfect your form.

It takes years to master, there are so many things to tweak. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to answer.

Our track and field coach picked me out to try Shotput because of my height and long reach and im on the powerlifting team. I've never done shotput before but I managed to throw 30.5 my first day (Just from what he called the "Power Stance" which was me getting the ball as far as I could any way I want as long as i held the ball in the proper spot) So now he is going to teach me proper technique and by the time april comes around i might be able to qualify (if i want to pursue it).

    Any pointers would be amazing

Ask your coach what technique he will be teaching you. If you have a choice then try to find which one you like better. I find the thinner throwers use the glide more, and bigger throwers tend to spin, but it is really up to you, I'm 5'10" 240 and I glide.

for pointers now I would say make sure your power position is perfect or near perfect. When you learn the other techniques your power position is the end of your put.

I would goto google and search for techniques and such, watch youtube videos, especially comparison videos. Slow motion videos are good, and try to fix yourself to what they do. Even though most people glide or spin, just watch the power for now, and take notes on everything.

Nice posts guys, Ill definitely be uploading vids this weekend, I have a frame by frame camera.

You know, throwing means alot to me now... And I really don't want to be 4th or 6th best. I want to throw 45+ by end of junior year. And that means I have to work my ass off. I know I can do it with all you guys.

Also keep this thread on top so other throwers can come join us.

Hey, I think it was your from before, for your rotation in shot put, I think i may have found the reason you are becoming unbalanced. I had the same problem, and found my answer to be a combination of three things. Most importantly was my turn from out of the back of the ring. Once you turn your body for the wind up, you need to open your left hip (assuming youre a right handed thrower). You need to turn your left foot so that our heel points towards your right foot and you toe points away. When you do this you then drop your left hip and you swing your right foot around. That basically cured by unbalanceness which stemmed from just turning my upper body to start the rotation, which left me completely unbalanced. The two other things are keep you back straight up and down throughout the throw and keep your abs tight.

this thread is now about monster throws that never count...i.e. huge fouls

had 3 of those today. guy fouled 2 over the 49 mark then dropped the weight over 60 feet a little later but had a toe foul.

then my best girl fouled a 40+ weight throw. fml sometimes i swear. we still did well today. 3 state qualifiers now in the weight. shoulda had a shot qualifier in there as well. eh gotta get ready for outdoors now...if the snow ever melts.

Starting track on Monday. I dominated the discuss in middle school, but played baseball my frosh/sophomore year instead in high school:/ I decided to do track this so that I can still be competitive while also seriously lifting for football.

    Squat: 365 (400)
    Deadlift: 390 (a lot more)

Twisted, one of the seniors was telling me I need to not only push off my back throw when initiating the throw, But I also need arch my back like a bench bress almost and only use my arm as an extension?

I throw javelin as well, aiming for a solid 160 year, but that won't do anything but get some team points in the duel meets

im guessin this is shotput. although im trying to piece together what you mean. push off the back throw when initiating? if ure talking about pushing off the right leg then yes. but its also equally important to unseat first and reach hard with the left leg to the toeboard.

as far as arching the back id so no. keep it straight. although they might be referring to the 'backwards C' position. this is the moment just before striking with the ball when the shoulders are back and the hips are pushing forward. creates a stretch in the chesh, trunk, and creates a pulling effect.

like i said man get some videos up and i can critique all day.

    UNRELATED note

i got 4 kids going to indoors states!!!

    boys
    56' wt, 48'10 sp

    girls
    33'8 sp
    33'6' sp
    38 wt

    pretty stoked

What do you guys think would be a good goal to go for this season for shot put? I am a freshman, so it's my first year using the 12 lb shot. Last year I got 35 feet with the 8 lb shot. I have gotten a lot stonger, but shot put is far from my best event.

    Thanks.

usually i tell my kids to hit whatever they threw last year. in other words 35 is good place to start.

42' is our varsity lettering mark. so obviously thats the goal for all my throwers but ya gotta start realistically before going for bigger numbers.

"yard by yard is hard. inch by inch is a cinch" John Powell said that. Forgot who he quoted though.

Ex-thrower here, did it junior and senior year in high school. Was able to get up to 52' by the end of my senior outdoor season. I love the sport, wish I could still be doing it in college.

What, no hammer/javelin/weight throw love?? JK brahs

College thrower checking in, I throw at a small NAIA school in the midwest. Not a superstar, but I'm making a lot of progress. I know a decent amount about all of the throws, so feel free to ask for any advice or critiques.

Yea, I never touched either until college and you could tell its something that some people will never be good at no matter how much they try. I actually think its almost harder to teach it than to do it, so I commend you for the success with your athletes.

its good stuff. i gotta few kids that are just hardcore disc throwers but found an indoor event with the weight. definitely helps reignite some intensity in training and keeps em interested.

its weird too cuz i gotta freshman that is uncoordinated as hell. has trouble doing half turns with a shot without falling over. but put a weight in his hand and he can one turn 40 feet already. youd think it be the other way around but hey whatever haha.

Did pretty bad at the meet on Thursday... Power position throw 35, messed up one with a kick slide ( Throw was so bad I scratched on purpose), and I also did a 34 power position throw...

This just motivates me to work even harder than I am right now. I lifted pretty intense yesterday.

Im a senior and am throwing disc. This season is lookin alright so far, hittin the ring and the gym hard. Last year's PR was 124'9" in a meet, 140'+ in practice. Still feel like i could be doing alot better as i threw 110' my freshman year, but skipped sophomore year.
    Goals:
    Bench - 275
    Squat - 405 ATG
    DUNK

Twisted, would power cleans help increase my explosiveness for shot put?
