I like these and will use them on occasion to change things up. I like the combination of feet together squats and normal or wider squats. My workout partner had shoulder surger (rotator cuff) and has trouble holding a barbell on her shoulders. I had her using d/bells (20s) in each hand. She used wraps the first couple of sets and then tried holding/resting the d/bells on her shoulders. We like doing these I just see them becoming a problem for her until she can hold a b/bell across her shoulders. She's been doing squats on my leverage machine so it's not the actual weight on her shouldrs that's a problem. Anyone know of a better way than d/bells? I honestly don't know if it's a range of motion issue with her that won't let her hold the b/bell in place or if it's physical pain, or if she's just scared that position may re-injure her shoulder. Next time we might try it holding the b/bell in a front squat or cleaning position.

One solution would be to not use a straight bar. A Buffalo bar or a SSB would solve that problem, not sure if you have access to these or can obtain them.
Gentle, and slowly progressive, shoulder and pec dynamic/static stretching should help some if it's not a pain/immobility issue. I know a lot of shoulder surgeries result in permenantly reduced ROM though.

Well today is supposed to be squat day but came down with some sort of minor stomach bug overnight.Not really feelin 100% so a workout is out of the question.

Yeah safety squat bar, or Hatfield bar, someone Hatfield invented if I recall correctly;
It does throw you forward more than a regular bar, due to the camber, but she'll be able to free squat without shoulder strain. She could even hold onto the power rack with both hands whilst squatting and it won't fall off.
A cheaper idea, if buying new, would be this; http://topsquat.com/

I keep constructing assorted pull-up bars in my quest to accomplish good muscle-ups. I currently have 4 in my basement at assorted heights and configurations. They range in diameter from 1.25" to my beastly 2 incher.

The topsquat from Dave Draper looks like a possibility, over 1/2 the price of a safety bar. I doubt I'll ever see a safety squat bar on CL. You never know though I saw some strongman stones for sale recently on CL in my area. Not sure about the buffalo bar, I'd need to see a picture from the front of that girl using it to decide for sure.

...dealing with a herniated disc, I have been looking around at different bars for squatting. Does anyone know if one of the specialty bars actually would reduce stress on the lower back?
From what I can tell, the SS bar would put the bar higher on your back, so if you're trying to do low bar then it would increase torque...I think.
It also looks like many of the specialty bars are geared more towards people with shoulder issues than back...
Animal, what do you think of your cambered bar...do you think you end up using your low back more or less than with a regular bar?

Hip belt squats. Or if you already have a trap bar give it a go with it.
