Do any of you women encounter other females in the gym trying to be competitive with you when you workout. The other day, I had a female go to each machine that I did and it almost seemed like she wanted to prove to me that she could lift what I lift. Love that women are trying to lift heavy, but she kept giving me dirty looks at the same time. Ugh!

This probably wouldn't bother me too much, because it would mean that there was actually another woman in my gym's free-weight area.

Frankly, I am one of maybe 3 women in the free weight area and I am the only one who picks up something heavier than the 10 lb DB. So, no, no women try to compete with me. The men on the other hand tend to up their game when they realize how close I am to them on some exercises.

There is only 1 female at my gym who really takes her training seriously. I'd swear she is the type that wants to jump in with the men and outdo them haha. Doesn't bother me though, good for her.
The group that amuses me is the ones that are newer to the gym, they spend a good deal of time in the gym, but don't actually DO anything. Its usually a group of 2-3 females. They come to the gym, walk around, look at the different machines, fool around on a few of them a little bit, chat, walk around some more, etc.
I've noticed two separate groups, I mainly noticed them because the place is surrounded by mirrors and even when I'm lifting I can see them walking back and forth or just standing around. Normally I'd just assume they don't know where to get started, however the place offers free "personal training" for getting newcomers started with a routine.Last edited by guest89; 02-24-2010 at 06:55 AM.

That maybe true but i don't think it's enough education for newbs. I've watched my gym (the free personal trainer session) introduce some of the newbs and they just take them through a few of the machines in the ladies area. From bis to legs. Then the ladies come in and get on the first machine and then go to the next one and so on. Sometimes they don't even make it very far. I applaud these ladies for wanting to change but i think they need more information.
If these ladies were told and shown how to use barbells and dumbbells, which muscles groups to do on what days they might reach their goals faster. Even a print-out of some sort to help them out.
They just have no clue. It's not their fault, they don't know because know one's told them. It's extremely rare that i see a woman sweat in my gym from weight training.
On that note, more women who are actually serious about WEIGHT TRAINING should take the time to do some research.

NO rarely do I see girls in the free weight room but I get this from guys alot!
LMAO! Once I was throwing in some bb curls in front of the preload racks and this guy walks around the other side of me and winks and picks up about 10 lbs more then me and starts to curl. I thought he was flirting with me, so I picked up the next weight above his and started did a few culrs,, smiled at him. He picked up the next size up from mine and did the samething, so I went up another size and he did the same only by this point we were close like a 100 lbs nearing the top of the preloads and he couldn't curl that much weight so he got mad and left. oops.. so much for flirting I guess.

I don't use machines, so I can't say I've had that experience...but I HAVE seen a girl copy all of the DB exercises I was doing. haha. Literally, one after another. I could feel her watching me, but that's okay. Hopefully she learned something.
I was using 30lb DBs and she was using 10's, so there was no competition there hehe.Hard work = Hard body.

Well I was changing the weight on a barbell, holding one end of it up while I was changing it. The spring clip was kind of messed up and I was having a little bit of trouble getting it off the bar when this chick comes over, grabs the bar from me and goes, "You got that? It might be to heavy for you." Ummm...yeah for some reason I think I can handle 30 lbs. I yank it back from her and go, "Yeah, the spring clip is just stuck." She gives me a dirty look and walks away. Mind your own business! If I'm not asking for help, I don't fu**ing want it!!!
Anyhow, since then every time she sees me at the gym she gives me dirty looks and does the same thing, looking to see how much weight I'm lifting. Ridiculous.

^^^^This. There are NO women in the gym I go to. There are two separate rooms across campus from eachother; one is free weights the other is machines. No girls in the free weight room. I wouldn't mind lifting with another woman that had the same goals as myself (strength gains, etc), that way maybe we could inspire each other? Maybe just keep each other on track and throw in a friendly challenge?
Ha! Who am I kidding? Women are more competetive than men. There would be no friendly challenge, just an all out war

Very true!
I'm very competitive and my dad was my training partner. I am stronger than he is but his pride would never let him admit it, he would always try to out do me.
Here's good stronger than a man story: One day when my dad & I were moving an old vending machine down 3 flights of stairs from an apt. bldg he lost his grip and yelled move! Let it go! I didn't, I walked the machine down the remaining 1.5 flights alone on adrenaline. A day I'll never forget, when he said I have to admit, what you did most men I know could not have.
One of the ladies where I work out, she's awesome, she's one of the coaches, she's very small but you should see her lift. Here's the link, I have NFC how to embed videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4guTF...ayer_embedded#

I'm the only female in the free weights area in my gym! Plenty of women in the body combat, pilates, general cardio area etc. I've once seen a female rugby player doing weights, and Ive seen a disabled woman a couple of times (which was great, and very inspiring to see!), but apart from that, it's just me and a load of guys.....can't complain

This is so strange to me as before my move 5 years ago I went to a gym (currently train at home)that had a fair amount of female lifters (and a few BBer's) and never had a competition problem. Actually thought they were really nice and helpful (usually got the most compliments from the woman), no issues with the men as well. I'm a pretty relaxed person though so i tend not to care (or notice ) if someone is competing with me. In every aspect of life if someone copies me I just take it as a compliment, and move on.

LOL. Same here. Really, though, there aren't that many women who have the desire to lift heavy. Although I have noticed a couple who have, over the past year, increased the weight they do for DLs and squats quite a bit. I mean, they've really pushed themselves. Went from holding 10 lb DBs for Romanian DLs to breaking out the Oly bar and sliding a few 10s on each side. And -- blush -- I think it's because they've seen me, for the last few years, really loading up the bar for my squats and DLs and -- Surprise! -- I haven't become OMG sooo Huge! Just have got some nice, shapely legs from it.
But, yeah, I do check around to make sure I'm still lifting the most. :LOL
