for the last year all i have trained after a fairly long layoff is:

    bench
    squat
    front squat
    overhead press
    deadlift
    power clean
    dip
    pull up

i'll be the first to admit i dont have the best physique but i think ive built a decent base to work on.

Yes, if you just stuck to compounds you'll do very well. Isolation exercises aren't really necessary, or at least not for beginner or intermediate lifters.
As for your choice of exercises, I would hardly consider curls or shrugs compounds. Get rid of those and stick in some chins, power cleans and dips.

My current routine is focused solely on freeweight compound exercises (only exception being Smith calf raises) and I'm seeing some nice improvements in strength all round.
    Strength + Speed = Power

If you never fail, you aren't truly pushing yourself to the limit. If you never push yourself to the limit, how do you know what you're truly capable of?

isolation work should focus on glute activation, core stability, scapular retraction and depression, rotor coff work, neck flexors and grip work

    squat
    dl
    power clean
    bench
    dip
    pullups
one hand sntch or on hand deadlift

Funny you list bicep curls in there when your title specifies compounds.

Loving it. You're going to see me in there doing 15 sets because I'm hardcore, not because I'm getting nowhere like your imagination.

If you're new and have lagging bodyparts, incorporate some isolation work if you wish.

Want bigger biceps? Pick up heavy stuff, row heavy stuff and do some barbell curls.

Keep in mind though, the majority of your arm is your tricep as well.
