Fastest way to get rid shin splints

Like the title says, I have been the recent recipient of shin splints once again. I got them four or five years ago during high school basketball tryouts. and did not have them that long. I play basketball and I am working out every day now. So any ideas of the cause? But the main point is how to get rid of them as quickly as possible. I have had them for two or three weeks now...I am definately ready to get rid of them. Thanks for the help.

    is what I did.

ice your legs - ice bath works well

    do calve/heel/ankle stretches

come back slowly with the training, very light stuff.

---for me I was out all season basically

ever day I went to PT
got my ice bath, did my stretches and worked the bike

about 2 weeks in i started running again, with taped arches.

*I was on the track team*
when I had them, I couldn't even jump.

but the key is rest, no BS.

The quicker it takes you to realize, the faster you will heal, and it doesn't take that long to heel.

I just move around a lot....

There isn't really any real "quick cure" for them. It just takes time and depends on your body. You need to make sure to put as little impact on them as possible. So not much running, especially no plyo or jump training till they start to get better. I played through most of my shin splint issues in high school but I only would get them during track from running the hurdles.

Just like iRun said lots of Ice and logs of Rest! Good luck man.

quickest way to get rid of them? ...Get better shoes.

90% of the time "shin splints" are caused by improper footwear. It COULD be that your "shin muscles" (yeah i dont know what they are called, or care) aren't strong enough and are tearing as in real shin splints... but if you exercise and play basketball almost everyday I doubt that is the problem. If you are wearing your favorite designated BB Shoes, that you've been wearing for the past year or more then... yeah, you probably just need new shoes.

All the above info is great, but one thing i have found that is cheap and has made a ridiculous difference in my shin splints are gel inserts. It might sound funny but that 30 bucks has kept my shin splints non existent this season.

I ran track and X-country for four years had shin splints three of them. RICE works if you have them but a huge part is the shoes, Gels are amazing i'm cheap and wouldn't buy them even though my coach kept pushing them on me, HE actually bought me some and it was like running on clouds i gladly paid him back, greatest things ever.

Also if your looking for shoes Asics are amazing along the lines of comfort and breath-ability!

If they are REALLY bothering you, get a stress test done...they send you on a run and when they are at max pain they get you to come back in the room and shoot 3 pins in each shin measuring the pressure of the muscles in your shins pushing against the facia (muscle covering)

If the pressure is high, you may have compartment syndrome and it could require surgery...I had to have the operation August 2008 and was out for 3 months but I have been 100% every since and shin splints never came back.

I'm not saying you have CS, but just something to think about if it's re-occuring, might want to get it checked out by a specialist.

I agree with Asics if you're running, unfortunately they don't make a good basketball shoe. I also agree that 90% of shin splints are crappy shoes that make you run in an uncomfortable manner and can be corrected. Proper stretching and icing down your shins after you play help as well. I would try these out before you worry about seeing the doctor. Putting weight on can cause these too, but 190 lbs doesn't seem too much. I'm 6'1" and got them at 220 but felt fine at 205.

ace wraps from the ankle to the knee. only time you take em off is when youre icing or showering. this includes sleeping, walking, at work, whatever. i used to get some nasty shin splints and heard that from several trainers so i tried it. usually mine go away in a few days.

id also reccomend RICE (Rest, Ice,Compression, Elevation), new shoes, gels, and possibly a trainer to check out your running/jumping form.

$20 gel insoles from walmart helped me to not get them again. Took a week for them to go away.

warm up by stretching those muscles and tendons and doing toe taps (quite a few) before exercising. that always helps. also, if you get it really bad and it doesn't go away. see a doctor about compartment syndrome.

Maybe, these are the causes of it:

    Overused muscle
    Chronic compartment syndrome
    Pes Planus
    Tight Calves

The best medication for that is rest.
