The Big Bad Wolf
I just bought a 100+ year old sled sight unseen
I haven't even seen a picture of it.
I do know it is German made, wood and wrought iron, has nicely mortised joins and is seemingly durable enough to withstand another hundred years of slamming down hills at 50mph.
Tomorrow's weather will tell if I just bought something to hang on the wall as a decoration.....................

Every time down the hill is a chance to render it useful only as decoration. :-)

Indeed.
The forecast is for snow tomorrow so we'll see.
We don't get snow very often here.

Put up some pics when you get a chance, Geno. I'm curious to see it (once you get it).

I will put some up this evening. I'm actually in the Ferg (the student center) at the University of Alabama right now and won't get home until about 6:00 pm central.
I'm interested to see what it looks like as well. I was casting about looking for a place to buy a sled today - not many for sale in central alabama lol - and one of my wife's friends told her to call an antique store in Springville, AL (thirty miles North of Birmingham). Lo and behold, they had a sled. I sent a friend to pick it up for me.

Is it a runner sled or a tobbogan?

I think it's a small tobbogan from the description I managed to get over the phone but I really don't know yet. The guy I bought it from has no idea what a tobbogan is and the girl I sent to pick it up is not answering the phone (she's from Florida and wouldn't know either).

I know this has been an unusual winter for us, but the fact remains. You live in Alabama. Wtf are going to do with a sled?

Probably hang it on the wall in my tool shed but you never know.
There's a storm in TX that just dumped 7+" on Dallas and it's moving east.
Plus, we usually make a few trips to the mountains each year if nothing else.

Wait - aren't you close to Mobile?
Did you see the Mobile National Weather Service winter storm warning issued an hour or so ago?

Yeah I've been following the weather on that storm since we've had a few unexpected and unusual snow and ice storms this year. I'm in north AL near New Market.

Should see some snowfall. May not be impressive, but you never know, this storm has been a lot stronger than expected.
Dallas was forecasting "maybe a chance of a flurry" last night. They upgraded to "maybe 2 inches" this morning and "more than 6" by lunch and it's still falling.

It was like that up here Monday. Not 6 inches worth, but they origianlly predicted a high near 50 then a high near 40 and we got an inch or so of snow.

It's a runner sled and it's not a hill bombing type - it's a "strap your gear on it and pull it behind you" type.

Not pretty but the prospects for a sled in Central Alabama are very slim at the moment. It seems to be very well built. Next time I see some snow, we'll test it.

Exactly what I said.
Sleds are extremely rare here though. Having any sled in a snow event is rare as well.
I have some big ass cardboard boxes too.

might sound crazy, but my brother and I used to (still do on occasion) use dog food sacks as makeshift toboggan.
cut it in half, put the inside part to the snow rock back and slide.
this works exceptionally well if the dog food inside is rather greasy an the grease sticks to the plastic lining

A piece of vynel floor works really well too.

Inner tubes ftw! All the tire stores around here carry huge truck tire inner tubes for sledding around this time of year. They are only like 15ish bucks.

I thought I might have to strap the contents of my truck to it and drag it the 15 miles home from the ghetto liquor store at 1:30 am this morning though. We had an inch plus of snow that made the roads real wet and they froze up after dark. The stupid southerners started wrecking all over the place and the cops shut down all the roads in the two counties I had to travel through to get home. I have very little use for such nonsense so I drove around the barricade onto the interstate and went home. The interstate was actually not very bad. The local roads were a solid sheet of ice for the last two miles though - took a damn long time to get home. I am so glad I still own a gas guzzling 4 wheel drive redneck pickup truck. At one point I had to back down a hill in nuetral and try again in 4 wheel drive to get up it and at another point I drove about a half mile with two tires in the snow on the side of the road to get any traction at all.

Go to a fish packing house and get a couple of the waxed boxes, they work pretty well for a sled type implement of bodily destruction, lol. We used to ride down the sand dunes in Kill Devil Hills in them.
