I am about 2months post op from a microdiscectomy on a herniated l5s1. I am virtually painfree but still have a little tingling in my toes and some other areas. I am listening to my doctor as far as not lifting for about another month, when we will go over things.
I am wondering if anyone has gotten back into powerlifting after a similar surgery?
My doctor says theoretically I can go back to working out and heavy lifting but I will always be at a higher risk for reherniation. My surgeon actually seems fairly knowledgeable about weightlifting which is interesting.
He however really is discouraging me from getting back to heavy squats and deadlifts. He agrees they are great exercises when done right, however any break in form with that much weight is a bad idea.
Any input?

I agree with your Dr. I work in rehab and have seen and worked many who had your surgery, unfortunately the rate of re occurrence with this surgery is fairly high, I would be very cautious and play it smart when it comes to training.
Being a real lifter is not about a number, or a medal, or somebody else telling you that you are a real lifter. It is about commitment to the iron and strength of purpose.
