I'd take a shake after for sure. Also you should be eating a good whole-food meal (with enough protein and carbs) about 1.5-2 hours pre-workout.

    I was wondering this too..

    I have heard two things..

    1. The bodies protein/nutrient uptake is enhanced for 30 minutes after a workout so, make sure you take within that time frame
    2. Whey protein takes about two hours to digest

Now if both of these are true, depending on the length of the workout I would think before/intra would be the most beneficial.. Unless in the 30 minutes your body can digest enough of it to be utilized to it's fullest..

Some people swear by only taking protein after a workout although i prefer to take it both before and after it is known as saturating your muscles with protein my some people.

    1. Right upon waking up - feed muscle coming out of a catabolic state.

    2. Right after working out for sure. (Should try to get it in within 30-45 min of finished workout. Before workout is optional, but not a must if you get a good protein meal an hour before your workout. However, I have had good results taking before workout as well.

    3. Before going to bed. (Casein Protein - Slow digesting keeps muscles fed while in catabolic state (Sleep).

Here are some interesting studies done that you all should look at. Basically it comes down to this:
In the present study, the effectiveness of the drink appeared to be greater when it was consumed immediately before exercise (PRE) compared with immediately after exercise (POST). Approximately 209 ± 42 mg of phenylalanine were taken up across the leg in the PRE trial, whereas only 81 ± 19 mg of phenylalanine were taken up during POST.

MORE OVERALL PROTEIN SYNTHESIS OCCURRED WHEN THE DRINK WAS TAKEN PRE-WORKOUT

    ajpendo.physiology.org/cgi/content/full/281/2/E197
    ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11440894

I consider these reliable sources (.org and .gov, not .com) but someone correct me if this information is wrong or I understood it incorrectly

Training with a belly full of a shake or meal is a bad idea. Instead go with a quality intraworkout product that has bcaas and fast digesting whey protein hydrolysate.

In the first linked study (2nd doesn't have full text I don't believe), the tests were done in a fasted state. This completely invalidates the tests for our purposes because no bodybuilder in his right mind is doing any sort of heavy weight lifting in a fasted state.

So yes, if you are in a fasted state then you should obviously take a protein shake or amino acid drink prior to working out. But, if you're eating correctly and have a high daily protein intake then it would change things quite a bit.

As Haiz said, eating a real meal with protein + carbs 1.5-2 hours prior to working out is a better solution. Then drinking a protein shake or eating a protein+carb meal immediately post workout is optimal.
