I was eating healthy losing weight and had my cholesterol at 314 before Xmas with LDL at 245, so I ate even healthier,I had three whole eggs a day before so just switched it up to egg whites only, and I ate the best I've ever eaten in my life for the next month and my cholesterol was 258 with my LDL at 189. Dropped about 60 points in a month but doctor wasn't satisfied and reviewed my diet....told me it was terrible, too much cholesterol and gave me one of those doctor recommended 1600 calorie a day (lol) diets.
This is what I've been eating for the past month:
Meal 1:
6 egg whites, 3 slices turkey bacon, 1 cup blue berries
Meal 2:
pork loin top loin chop (boneless) with cup of broccoli, cup of blueberries
Meal 3:
Chicken breast with 2.5 oz feta cheese, cup of broccoli
Meal 4:
Chicken breast with 2.5 oz feta cheese, cup of broccoli
He said the turkey bacon, pork, and cheese were all terrible for me and my diet is what must be causing the high cholesterol...then gave me his sheet of recommended foods to eat to reduce cholesterol...I pointed out that lean pork and lowfat cheese were on his sheet but he just waived me off and told me to ignore that and said they were terrible..
I don't have any family history of high cholesterol, it was always fine before, and I think the only thing that could have raised it were eating 3 whole eggs a day. I don't think this diet is high in cholesterol as most Americans eat crap and seem to be fine, could I get a second opinion? Because if I have to follow his stupid sheet, my only sources of protein available are chicken breast and egg whites and I will go mad and abandon the diet within two weeks if I eat nothing but chicken breast and egg whites....Was it even possible to reduce my cholesterol from 314 to under 200 within a month?
Thanks

Dietary cholesterol has little impact on liver regulated blood cholesterol. People with chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis and alcoholics with liver cirrhosis, and diets high in saturated fats can expect to have high blood cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol is good for you so you should not eliminate it completely.

I was meaning more the Turkey bacon? Frying oil at high temperatures can damage the oil, making it harmful. Olive oil is not the greatest for frying due to its low smoke point...which means it is very easilly damaged when frying. I switched to a nut oil for any frying I do and watch the temperature. I keep olive oil for cold dressings.

314 to 200 is probably impossible from diet and exercise alone. You hit 245 from 314 without meds? If so, very impressive.
If your total cholesterol is 314 you need to follow the advice of your doctor. Perchance was your first cholesterol test done fasting or had you eaten? Having eaten within a few hours of your test will raise your blood cholesterol significantly.
Either way 314 or 245, I would assume your doctor would put you on a statin and/or colesevelam or something to that effect.
Along with eating cholesterol and as you stated above, fats can raise your cholesterol (trans and saturated).

No meds, doctor wants see if I can lower it more before giving out meds, I'm only 23 so he doesn't want to give them to someone so young and I don't want to take them. If 314 to 245 in a month is really good why is he still acting like there is no way I can get it lower? I never had high cholesterol before and this could be the result of egg yolks and I got rid of them and lowered my cholesterol this much in a month.

are your triglycerides high too?
LDL cholesterol is not all bad. There are two type of LDL, one is bad and contributes to atherosclerosis, and the other isn't and does not. When you get your cholesterol checked, you get the sum of both, so you don't get to know which kind you have more of. A high fat diet usually leads to a high amount of the 'neutral' LDL, which could be why it is so high. If your triglycerides are low, then I don't think you have much to worry about. Low HDL, High Triglycerides = bad; High HDL, Low Triglycerides = good. But hey, I'm no doctorLast edited by Opies; 02-02-2010 at 06:41 PM.
