    Keto for College Athlete

I am a freshman in college and I play Divison 3 colege quarterback. I am 6'0, 218 lbs. I would like to lose about 10 pounds of fat while still maintaining or even gaining muscle during our winter strength program. After doing much research, I believe that a ketogenic approach might be the best for me. It will not be hard for me to stay on the diet while eating at the dining hall, and it seems to be the only diet with the possibility of gaining muscle while cutting fat. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I could accomplish my goals this way. However, I have never heard of college or professional athletes or football players on the ketogenic diet and I was wondering if anyone has any comments or experiences with being an active athlete and using keto.

    Thanks!

I personly would never put an athlete on the keto diet. It is imposable to make any further recomendation on proper diet since you did'nt post any work out or diet information.

Agreed. You wont have the energy you need as an athlete on the keto diet. I'm in your same situation. I'm an athlete who is cutting. I would recommend something similar to what I do. Only time i take in carbs are in the morning(oats) after cardio and I take them pre and post weight training in the afternoon. I use carbs for a specific job. I take them 2x day after workouts. That helps to replenish your body/muscles and helps absoprtion of protein and other supps(bcaa's, beta alanine, etc). I take carbs pre workout(weight training or practice) because it gives you the extra fuel you need. If you are not taking in carbs before a hard workout, you will not have this extra boost/fuel. Its needed to get that extra rep and get that extra step. As an athlete you want to perform at your best and have maximum energy and stamina. Carbs postworkout are CRUCIAL as well. Again, as an athlete you want every edge. Postworkout carbs are going to help with absorption of protein and recovery, which is also critical because you want to recover as fast as possible...with the least amount of soreness possible. Carbs used to be my enemy. Now they are my best friend because I figured out how to use them. Just try what I'm saying and you will see results in your body and performance. Trust me.

there is a reason you have never heard of an reputable athlete using a KETO diet!

i would not recommend a keto diet to any one and definitely not an athlete! a keto diet should not be used by anybody but a 300lbs bodybuilder (even then i dont like it), and even Low carb diets are only good for small periods of time right before competitions or basically to get as lean as possible "temporarily!

stick to a diet with about 20% protein 15-20%fats and the rest carbs! cut the calories by about 2 calories per lbw from ur maintenance 4-5 times a week (primarily on low intensity training days and off days) and then add 2 calories per lbw to ur maintenance the other 2-3 days (primarily ur heavy and high intensity days)!

this will keep ur metabolism humming and allow you to cont. to keep ur strength and muscle!
the key to fat loss is to be consistent, it will take some time but it will be worth it!

*plz don not use a KETO diet!!!!

    Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. That is similar to what I was thinking about doing. I just wasn't sure how to moderate my carb intake. This will help me greatly and I am sure will give me a ton of benefits. Thanks for the advice!
