in body building- deadlifting is the most overrated exercise ever. to understand that, you must not confuse popularity with rating. the benchpress (for example) is NOT overrated- it's just very popular. popular =/= overrated.
the deadlift is overrated. it isn't necessary- at all. the raw fact of the matter is that one can build a limitlessly strong body, without regularly (or ever) deadlifting. there is nothing particularly amazing about this exercise. yes, it is versatile in that it exercises an amazingly large amount of muscles at once. but what does that really mean? it doesn't focus on and nail any muscle in the same way that other exercises do.
what i am saying is this. one could build their pectorals, shoulders, biceps, forearms- everything, utterly beautifully, without having to deadlift and frankly it's obvious.
the way people obsess over deadlifting on internet forums is amusing.

You OBVIOUSLY do NOT know what deadlifts do and actually how good they are for everyone from athletes to rehab patients to the elderly. Im not going to waste my time explaining everything to someone who is so naive. do yourself a favor and go read some stuff on deadlifting by grey cook.

i never claimed otherwise.
i'm not complaining, just stating.
yes deadlifts are good (great) for athletes or rehab patients. those are two examples of areas where deadlifting helps a lot. it always helps a lot and it's a fine exercise. it seems like many of you are missing the point.
what i said i was, in body building- dead lifts are overrated.
very true.Last edited by texas_longhorns; 02-01-2010 at 08:02 AM.

Hmm, you do have a point. Many guys on the forums rave about deadlifts and squats, but very few of them actually have great overall muscular development. It is my belief that some guys perform these harder lifts just to believe themselves part of some hardcore group of lifters. But I think that most sensible people know that there isn't a single excercise that is neccesary for muscular development.
That being said, I do like deadlifts. I think that anyone who is willing to perform grueling and strenuous lifts like squats and deadlifts will most likely develop a mindset and physical endurance that will give them an edge over the recreational gym-rat required for physical progression. It also does work work the back more effectively and efficiently than any other movement.Use the tools of the trade to help you. I use devices such as chalk for grip strength, gloves, wrist straps, lifting belts - if it helps you lift more, it's all good. - Ronnie Coleman, Hardcore, 2007 Triumph Books
Biggest question in bodybuilding: Whaddaya bench? As I've said before, it doesn't matter how much you bench; it matters how much you look like you bench... There's no round on stage that's the benchpress round. - Bob Chicherillo, World Class Physique, CMG

Well this turned a bit ugly. Why did I call you a troll? Because you come to a body building website and for your first post make a blanket statement about one of the best compound lifts. You go on to state that you can build shoulders, chest and biceps without deadlifting, which is obvious, because it doesn't hit those.
This sort of behavior is typical of someone who is trolling to get people stirred up.Jesus is my lifting partner.

Nothing comes close to the brutal intensity of a max deadlift. Squats come in a close second but for me deadlifts along with most composites separate men from babies.

Online, sure I would say it's overrated. Everyone rants about them and how amazing they are etc etc etc. To that extent I will give you credit. But that's it.
In the gym, I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen another person besides myself performing deadlifts in the 4+ months I've been going regularly. Honest. Closest thing was a dude doing power cleans. If anything, more people need to start doing deadlifts.

Agreed, and nearly everyone in this thread has all but proved his point by simply denying it without providing any such substance to defend it.
Deadlifts are great, but I do agree that for bodybuilders they are not necessary, but regardless we add them. And I think that this is the case because they are extremely fun to do(outside of their functional use). I'll always have them in my routine. Rack pulls just aren't as exciting. lolLast edited by Slow-N-Steady; 02-01-2010 at 09:00 AM.

Deadlifts are rarely seen in the gym. So I can't really call that overrated. Only place they are raved about is on the forums.
Flat Bench press is overrated in my opinion. Incline and decline bench both produce better results in my opinion, yet they are used far less than flat bench press. Yet to the OP they are popoular and rated correctly.-
