During my work set tonight, I did straight grip for the first 4 reps and then for the 5th, I switched to mixed-grip just because my forearms were starting to give. Well, that 5th rep came up MUCH easier for me. Why is that?

****.. i misread your question.
if your grip starts to slip, you won't have the same control over the bar, and overall form will breakdown.
i noticed the same thing.. if grip slips, the lift becomes much harder. the bar doesn't stay as close to my body, and my back is forced to bear more of the load.
