on anything other than space I would agree with you that government should stay out, but the time/costs/combined knowledge required for space is just too great for the private sector. the closest the private sector has gotten to space is skimming it with those virgin shuttle things, and don't say it's because NASA 'kept them down...' even the largest companies wouldn't have the money available for a decent profit vs. risk situation

If you think that we could have faked a moon landing in 1969, with the entire world watching, and gotten away with it for 40 years, you are beyond retarded. The amount of time put in by they USSR to study the evidence of the moon landing within the first year of it happening, is probably greater than all the time put into studying the evidence in the last 20 years.

it's always going to be difficult to get there. there just hasn't been a reason to put a person back there because of the risks involved. we can get samples through robots now so there's no need to put a person up there for simply research reasons.

if we were going to start the construction of a lunar base, however, we'd need people up there again. which IMO is where we should be heading
