is expired whey protein still good??? (reps for help)

say there was some whey protein expired 12/09...does that have any effect on the quality of the protein? i could care less about eating expired food, do it all the time, im just concerned about wasting my money on protein that has gone "bad" in the sense it has denatured or something?

I like to try different proteins so naturally I've had some older bottles of protein layin around, I've used em up to a year after there exp. If you ever have some you're wondering about just use your nose- you'll definately be able to smell if it's any good still!

But I guess your question is more geared towards should you buy exp protein. How much protein is it? Are you gonna use it up within a month, or is it gonna take you 6?

i wasnt concerned it was going to smell "rotten" or be visibly bad. i know cooking with whey can have negative effects on the proteins structure/efficiency as a protein...so i was curious if being past the expiration date had any impact on the proteins functionality.

haha maybbeee i LOVE eggnog so eggnog protein sounds like win. yeah taste/texture/etc mean nothing to me...as long as that 25g of protein is actually 25g of protein and not useless expired powder!

Oh my bad, things smelling rancid are usually a concern of mine so I thought you'd find that useful. Maybe you could search in the supplement science since you're asking about the denaturalization of compounds and not general info.

How have you been storing it? If its been in a cool, dry, and dark place its probably fine.

Expired whey usually last longer than the expiration date. It's all good Whey can last a very long time if packaged properly.

The protein content should be fine. Denatured protein does not affect protein quantity. When you cook eggs you denature the protein. Is it reasonable to not cook eggs because of this?

Not to hijack the thread, but has anyone had any stomach/GI problems from expired whey? I can deal with a slightly-off taste/texture for cheap whey, but really try to avoid the extra gas if I can. Lots of meat/eggs/whey/broccoli already create a bad concoction, without popping gas-x daily
    Fear God, not heavy weight.

Anyone have others experiences or knowledge about consuming expired whey?

I picked up a 8 lbs of vanilla ON Gold off a friend and it expired 6 months ago. Still tastes fine but I think it's giving me a little more gas. I do have a bit of a lactose intolerance. I usually pick up the chocolate flavored whey which I find goes down easier.

as long as they were kept at room temperature and they dont have clumping, weird smell etc. your fine then.
Contrary to popular belief, I dont actually bench 900lbs, as stated in my username.

    Supplement Stack:
    -Orange Triad
    -CreaCore
    -MusclePharm Fish Oil
    -Caffeine Tablets

Nutritional ketosis requires explicit reduction of CHO intake to generally lower than 50 g/d and, for some, <30 g/d. Protein must also be restricted, often to <1.8 g/d per kg body mass and sometimes to < 1.2 g/d per kg, with remaining calories composed from fat.

that's generally what happens a few months off the dated shelf: the taste of the whey becomes more 'pronounced' instead of 'transparent' and not quite as smooth digestion-wise, but that close it doesn't go 'rotten' like say milk or meat because its a heavily processed food designed for long-shelf life.

    Howdy neighbour.

6 months ago is fine - it'll probably keep for a lot longer than that.

I'll tell you something funny - I just found an unopened bottle of amino acid tablets (not exactly protein powder) that I had from almost 20 years ago (!!), and decided to try them out. They were crumbly as hell, but didn't give me any problems. I chucked the bottle out after finishing maybe 1/2 of it, just didn't like the way they were turning to powder.

EDIT: That ON whey is supposed to be low lactose (it's got lactase in it), so I don't know why it would be giving you more gas.
