i dont even think most people consider cop heroes, so i wouldnt really group them in with the other two.
the only thing that really annoys me is when some guy in the military is an arrogant douche about serving and he isnt even in a combat zone... please explain to me how some guy chilling in a military base in japan is providing any bigger service to this country compared to the average working joe in america.

What I hate are the people in these professions that go around and act hardass because of it.
Humble firemen and military personnel have my utmost respect. However there are some real douchebags (especially in the military) who basically think they are way better than everyone else. That's straight up bull****.
And cops arent really in the same league IMO.

lol if you start working with a lot of military personnel or living around them (done both) you realize most of them are borderline retarted, not very moral or patient, and decent at covering up their alcoholism
basically just like a lot of civilians
no disrespect, already signed up myself, just saying actions make the man, as most people pointed out I give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise"If the worst thing you ever do in your life is lose a fight than you lived a pretty good life.... " Useless Gomez

OP is right. I bet most servicemen and women, as well as cops/firefighters, sometimes think it's a little weird to be called "heroes." I mean, they're employed by the government, right? Does working for a government, to serve the people (whose taxes pay for your salary), automatically qualify you as a hero? No.
Although some will start barking like dogs at you for saying that, "How dare you disrespect them!!!" No disrespect, just plain thinking.Austin Texas Crew

Nothing gives them a entitlement but if civilians had a glimpse of what some of them go through their outlook would change.

actually they are heroes man
they will run in to the fire to get your ass out, the guys running up the stairs on Sept 11 up the twin towers, knowing that they wont come back, the people running down the stairs were seeing the look in the firefighters eyes and the policemens eyes, the eyes showed imminent death, but those guys still ran up those stairs
the nurses in hospitals, I have a lot of respect for those people
soldiers I heve respect for those too, well not the rednecks that just join so they could go and kill them selves an Arab for the **** of it, those retards I hate just as much as the terroristsEX YU Mafia #1 ----Cant Touch Us----
(OO==[][]==OO)
Its not important what they say behind my back, what is Important is whether they stop talking and look down when I turn around.

i agree with the OP to a certain extent. i respect and thank them for what they do but actions determine whether one is a hero. not just they have a specific title. people volunteering to go help down in Haiti, they are heroes. i guess there are different kinds of heroism
on a similar subject, when people think of heroes, they say police, FF, soldiers, etc. Why don't people ever mention PARAMEDICS?Last edited by rainieravesouth; 01-21-2010 at 08:44 PM.

I don't care to get too deeply into this argument, but I spent eight years in the Air Force and I never did anything heroic. Neither did anyone I knew. I also work with police and firemen now. I'm not aware of anything heroic that's been done by any of them, either. I have nothing but the deepest respect for these professions, but at the same time, I don't think it's good to abuse the word "hero" because it cheapens it when someone does something truly heroic.
Years ago, there was a plane crash in (I *think*) New York. There was a guy who dove into the icy water several times to rescue total strangers and saved a bunch of them before he died of hypothermia. Now compare his actions to someone who just happens to wear a police, fire, or military uniform.
So yeah, I agree with the OP.Trump 2016!

Actions determine if you're a hero, when your life is in danger, most of you call the police, if a fire breaks out, the fire department, etc. If you're health is in trouble, a paramedic. Once you put on the uniform, you're obligated to perform the tasks required and last time I checked, saving someone from a burning building, no matter if you're a citizen or a firefighter is a heroic act.

Just waiting to be negged on this one.
Most if not all firefighters, police, and soldiers do not refer to themselfs as heros. Nor is that the reason they took the job. Most will say they were just doing there job. It takes a certain kind of person to do the job of a firemen or policemen.
How is it that firefighters run into a burning building when everyone else is running out?
Anwser Courage. To save another mans life.
Rescuer creed: So others may live.
All firefighters live by that. Most won't refer to themselfs as hero nor do they except it. Others refer to them as hero's. Which they truely are spend a day with them.

Neg me to red I don't care. You all are just a bunch of haters. But feel lucky because even thought you are talking all this **** there still going to be there when you need them. Or when you brother, father, friend, mother, sister, etc. need them too.R.I.P. Hela

First of all, I am definitely NOT offended. I am actually in the military, and on my fourth deployment right now. I am not baseing what I said off society either. I am baseing off experience. Do I consider myself a hero? **** NO. If you re-read what I wrote, I started off by saying a profession cannot be labeled a "hero". Actions are what creates a hero. So this thread is really misleading. Does the Military, Police, and Firefighters get put in positions to have "heroic" acts? hell yes. So once again, this thread is kind of misleading. But since you do this dumb little thing called "thinking" you are well aware of that.
