I've read before (can't remember where or what exactly) that mixing some baking soda in a glass of water and drinking it can help balance the pH of the body. Could this be a benefit to weightlifters, or was this just BS? If there are benefits, when would be the ideal time to consume this concoction?

Any benefit in consuming Sodium Bicarbonate?

The carbonate probably dissociates into a weak base, then is neutralized in the stomach.
Its really no different then swallowing your saliva, as your saliva is basic (contains carbonate).
I'm under the impression that food compounds that are basic, survive the acidity of the stomach because they are unable to dissociate from their compounds (encased in fat, protein, carbohydrates or other). I also side with "the body should be slightly acidic" then basic. As proton gradients in the body are responsible for energy to be metabolized, and in a sense, are more effective when the body is slightly acidic. However, that's just my bro-science. Still need to read up.

Clearly. Do people just like to watch themselves type?
Sodium bicarbonate is an alkalizing agent. But it's not needed since your body maintains a serum pH that is slightly above neutral - that's alkaline there people - without supplementing with it assuming you have a good diet with plenty of teh goods like greens. Being "acidic" is not good.Last edited by rhizome; 01-19-2010 at 06:23 PM.

I have caught eye of a few studies using bicarb to positive effect in the 6 months. Definately in boxers and i think one in runners. Will dig them out later.
