Im 21 years old now with no drivers licence/owe a sh it load of money and still live with my parents because of this. i got a dwi when i was 18 and it basically made my life 1000x harder and im still getting affected 3 years later by it.
-10,000$+ in fines/lawyer fees/programs etc..
-went to jail for a few monthes (had other charges to)
-havent had my drivers licence for over 2+ years
-3 years probation
-insurance rates go up for 7 years
-have to complete outpatient program/drinking driving program
-have to rely on other people for rides
-ride my bike to the gym
really a stupid mistake and i learned from my lesson but in all reality at the time I wasnt going to stop until something bad happened (and luckily I only got arrested and didnt injure someone). when ithink about it now i realize how stupid it was but back then i just really didnt care. I would never do it again and i dont even drink anymore.
So to all you people out there especially if your under the of age 21 there is no tolerance law so if you have one drink and get pulled over you WILL get a dwi and it will ruin your life. You might think you wont get caught (like I did) but eventually it will catch up to you and the consequences far outweight the rewards.
edit: also forgot to add I still drove with a revolked licence and I got pulled over one day and got arrested so since then I have not driven (about 2 years)

Arrests (even those not leading to convictions) will hold you back forever. You can look into getting convictions expunged (or whatever your state does) and your arrests sealed (once again state specific).

Sucks...
I got pulled over after coming back from a prom party with my gf at the time and we got pulled over, we shat brix... since then I've never drunk then drove home or gotten in a car with the driver thats been drinking... we didn't get caught but we knew the cop knew, this was a sign and I'm not going to push my luck again, all I have to say is that night was from God because only once in a lifetime that what happened happened in those circumstances. I'm thankful for everyday because my life would've been in rubble's.

actually I wouldnt that charge got dropped. the reason I dont have my licence back is because I was under 21 when it happened. Right now once I finish this outpatient program I can get it back and my PO also said he would give me an early discharge.
If I finished this program when i got out of jaail about a year ago I would have gotten it back when i turned 21 but I didnt do the program because I didnt have health insurance so it costed 160$ a session (about 10 sessions a month for 3 monthes) and I couldnt afford it.

I think that's stupid as hell--I'm in the same boat. I've had trouble because of an arrest. The case was dismissed in court but still shows up on my record for all the world to see, and anyone that's looking (employers, etc) doesn't care if it was dismissed--if it's on my record, dismissal or otherwise, you still get f*cked.

yes the system can fuk you for one mistake which kind of sucks
actually got a DWI which is worse then a DUI. I had some other charges to and was going to court when I got arrested for the driving with a suspended licence (which is only a B misdemenor). At first they offered me 9 monthes jail but after going to court for a year and a half they I took a deal for 3 monthes jail/3 yrs probation and my record would be sealed.

I got a DWI when I was 17, got $750 fine and 6 months loss of license. It's a bitch having to declare it in every job application, but other than that it hasn't been overly hard on me. It was ****ing **** at the time. I'm 20 now, and this was in NZ so laws are a bit different. I'd had 4 beers and genuinely felt no effect (am quite tolerant), but was under 18 so it didn't matter.
How come you got huge lawyers fees? I just plead guilty and got a duty lawyer, didn't pay a thing..Last edited by carmour; 01-10-2010 at 09:44 PM.
