Tipping - Why I do not feel it has a place in a modern civilized nation

I'm sure this has been done to death, but hey.

I contend that tipping is NOT necessary and thus I do not tip. I do for exceptional service and only that.

    Here is why:

    - The waiter is simply doing his job. He is already being paid to bring me food. (this is really the main point).
    - There is no compelling reason for me to pay more for my food than I have to. I'm paying $10 for a dollar of food and 9 dollars of costs, which includes wages. There is no compelling reason for me to care that a waiter is paid low. They can always go get a better-paying job, even if it has worse conditions (even if they can't, I simply don't care). It's not my job to ensure he can meet rent, eat, pay his bills, or whatever.
    - The pervading sense of entitlement disgusts me. If I tip, I do at the front, and I've actually had lip from waitresses because I didn't leave anything on the table (as I slip my wallet back into my pocket even if I had intentions of tipping prior) because I didn't leave them any free money. A lot of people forget that I can still get them fired if they are rude to me. I haven't done so, yes, but I certainly can. The manager doesn't care if the waiter get tips, he cares if customers come back.

    More minor points
    - It is not done in any other country aside from Canada/US. It's not a historical cultural trait either, having only become a custom over the last hundred years. It's a manufactured cultural trait.
    - If I do not find something rude, (and it follows the law, etc) it is not. Thus it is not rude for me to not tip - again, if the waiter is a stranger, I simply don't care about his condition.
    - Many other service jobs do not demand tips. Any service job I have worked has never paid me any tips. Why are only some jobs "blessed"?

In replying, please avoid the usual fallacies (yes I know my last point is mostly a red herring). You probably won't convince me whatever you say, but some justification would be nice. Just keep in mind, any appeal to empathy won't work on me, suggestions I am being rude, or suggestions of obligation pretty much won't work either.

Stupid. If everyone had your mentality, then you wouldn't have a restaurant to eat in. No one in their right mind would put up with BS all day for 4.65 an hr. So if everyone did not tip, no one would be there to serve you food. Managers do care when servers get tipped or not. No tips=NO MOTIVATION TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT SERVICE. I do agree, some waiters and waitresses are awful and don't deserve anything. However, if you get adequate service, and not tip, thats just disgusting. If you don't like the culture, leave the country. If you don't like tipping, don't eat at a restaurant.

    This.

If everyone stopped tipping the cost of you meal would go up anyway because they would have to pay waiters a higher hourly wage.

Then service would suffer on average because there is no motivation for the waiter to work any harder than is absolutely necessary to not get fired.
Don't complain about the results you didn't get from the work you didn't do.

His point being that why should he give a **** about how much money somebody else makes? Some waiters at fancy places are pretty ballin because of the tips they get. Like he said they could get a different job with a more steady wage if they wanted, well maybe not so much in the current economy but the point is still there.
If service is exceptionally good and the waiter is very friendly by all means tip, but when it is slow, I don't get jack service andthe waiter is unfriendly why the hell should I reward them?

On some respects, I agree with the OP. At a nice restraunt, I have no problem with it, but some restraunts, like skyline, a waitress isn't needed. Its a bit expensive to begin with, then once you throw in a tip, it too expensive for a simple meal. I never not leave a tip, I just go eat somewhere cheaper.

I bet your beta ass will tip if you ever actually manage to take a female out to eat at a decent restaurant.

I agree 100%. A brain-dead monkey could be a server (and they usually are) Think about how easy their job is: Somebody points to something on a menu- the server goes back and shows the cook what they pointed to...then they bring the food back to the same table. ...and I'm supposed to commend you for a job well done???
Why am I the ******* for not tipping at the HOB when my ONE CAN OF BEER is $8?

Was about to point this out.

I'm 18 and worked in a restaurant for a year and a half. I know the importance of tipping, since I've seen restaurant business first-hand. If you're not going to tip them, might as well go make your own food, go get it yourself, get your own cutlery, drinks, etc. Grow up kid.

If service is exceptionally good and the waiter is very friendly by all means tip, but when it is slow, I don't get jack service andthe waiter is unfriendly why the hell should I reward them?
The point is, if you aren't tipping for reasonable service, where is the motivation for the server to really care about giving you food. If I didnt get tipped, and made 4 dollars an hour, my mentality in serving food would be the same as your mentality of my money. Why should I as a server give a S*** about showing you a good time? You mean nothing to me.

BTW, OP, I highly doubt your complaints would get a server fired, its close to impossible unless your getting like 5 complaints a day. So don't pretend that you have the reigns.

The motivation would be, if I work my ass off for this guy I might get a tip and if not I won't get ****. As far as I know, if it is your first time in a restaurant people don't know if you regularly leave tips or not. Maybe some of you guise carry a nice little nametag that says "I tip!" but most people I know do not

Fail. In France you don't tip, unless the waiter really did something to deserve the tip.
In my mind tip = reward, you don't get a reward for trying and failing, ok maybe you do, buty ou shouldn't.

I tip waiters but no one else. I've NEVER understood tipping your hairdresser and sh!t. Its their job and you are already paying them to do it, no reason to tip extra.
