What's with the title? I don't think people who are eating food for two, busting their asses in the gym, performing some cardio work and maintaining it all on a consistant basis, think in terms of being little trains. What you posted, did that actually go through your mind to hit that last rep? I just grunt and think bad words...we're very different.

I don't usually think of trains when I'm lifting. I'm generally thinking about things like my orchid garden, whether or not frilly pastel curtains really go with my furniture, and how I might improve my eggplant casserole recipe.

Dunno about positive thinking or that, usually I just think about how much of pussy I am going to be if I let any exercise beat me.............. I don't want to think of myself as a pussy so that works. Also I sometimes think about people I really don't like, I imagine I am training to tear them apart ( obviously I'm not ) One more more rep, just for them........... I'll try thinking of puppys or something tonight and see if it makes a difference.

There was one of those in the book too but he was too self important. Then there was an old train engine missing a wheel and he was too tired. There were several different ones that didn't want to try, for one reason or another.
But the little engine that could started off "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can" as he went up the hill. As he made it over the crest he said "I know I can, I know I can, I know I can..." and as he flew down the other side was going "I knew I could, I knew I could, I knew I could...."Time To Re-Schedule

Since I train by myself (without a spotter) In my head I'm kind of like the spotter/coach who's yelling and spitting in your face as you try to get one more rep.
"Come on you piece of s***, my grandma can do more that that!"Proof that it's never too late to start:

Embarrassingly weak on bench these days. Top set of the pyramid was 225 x 6. I usually get 5 and the last rep is a killer, but this week I got 6 and it wasn't as much of a struggle as the 5th usually is. I keep telling myself it's not about the weight but it's pretty lame I know.
I know, everybody says this, too - but it's a bit depressing because back in the day I was warming up with what was then an easy set of 225 for 12 or so before hitting the working sets with 275-315.Overweight and arrogant

The psychological aspect of this (I share the same 'condition') was such that I decided to put my focus on DB bench and use BB bench as a finish exercise. Heavy BB bench will never again be a possibility for me and struggling with making a decent set of 225 now where it was a mere warmup set with 315 next, and beyond, only a couple of years ago is discouraging and counterproductive. My shoulder is still tolerant of DB with no clear sign of being weight limited, at least for now. The name of the game is figuring out what I can do, and what I can do that isn't going to be joint limited.

I never felt comfortable with declines.....as for the lower part of the chest, that gets hit pretty hard with the dip machine that I use...
my inclines are at 30 degrees: if I do 45, my shoulders bark.....funny, but if I am completely upright using the pressing machine, they are fine!
something about that 45 degree angle.....but this is just all part of learning what works for your body and sticking with it....
since my goal is to lift forever, avoidance of injury , to me, is way up there in priority...
