If you wanted something to wear for strongman then I would go with neoprene warm pants like Rehbands or Vulkans (the Vulkans are a much better value).
For general gym training then the regular spandex-type material ones work pretty well. I like the Nike compression shorts the best out of the ones that I have tried, and you can find them for under $15/pair at Marshalls or TJ Max.Pro Strongman & Former National Champion

They are gay as hell, but incredible. (I don't have the shorts, but have the knee support tights for fell running etc) Just don't wear them in public.
http://www.opedix.com/ are apparently better if you're off down that tangent, but obscenely expensive.Last edited by Fluster; 01-05-2010 at 03:42 PM.

I competed in the IPA raw division wearing compression shorts. Whenever I deadlift or squat heavy I wear two pairs that are pretty tight. I asked the meet director (Gene Rychlak) about it, and he said it's fine and doesn't make a difference like briefs would. It's really just a small amount of support. It won't add anything to the lifts, but just makes things feel a little better imo.
