I have the shorts, they're no good for hip protection from squats IMO.

I have both Nike Dryfit and Adidas Climacool and the correlated base layers (maybe homo)

The Adidas ones are a much better fit and better made if you ask me - Buy a size up if you get Nike, they are a weird length.

Depends how much support you want - the Adidas Power Web ones are great, but probably wouldn't pass in a meet, the Tech Fit ones are simpler, but still pretty decent support. Seamless too.

If you wanted something to wear for strongman then I would go with neoprene warm pants like Rehbands or Vulkans (the Vulkans are a much better value).

For general gym training then the regular spandex-type material ones work pretty well. I like the Nike compression shorts the best out of the ones that I have tried, and you can find them for under $15/pair at Marshalls or TJ Max.

    Coreshorts. /thread.

... absolutely amazing and they're very comfortable. if you don't wanna shell out the $$ for them, then my personal favorite are the nike pro compression shorts. i've been wearing these for about 7 years (not the same pair) and they're perfect.

They are gay as hell, but incredible. (I don't have the shorts, but have the knee support tights for fell running etc) Just don't wear them in public.

http://www.opedix.com/ are apparently better if you're off down that tangent, but obscenely expensive.

I use and like the Rehband warm pants. Several others in my gym use them as well, both powerlifters and olympic lifters.

No no, they are definitely gayer than a handbag full of rainbows - but they are still like wearing springs on your legs

Are these type of shorts considered an "athletic supporter" (ie are they legal in raw federations)?

An athletic supporter is a jockstrap. Compression shorts aren't even legal in a lot of geared federations.

I competed in the IPA raw division wearing compression shorts. Whenever I deadlift or squat heavy I wear two pairs that are pretty tight. I asked the meet director (Gene Rychlak) about it, and he said it's fine and doesn't make a difference like briefs would. It's really just a small amount of support. It won't add anything to the lifts, but just makes things feel a little better imo.
