High rep, low weight exercises as cardio?

Instead of doing the traditional form of cardio on the treadmill or something similar, are there any disadvantages to doing high rep, low weight exercises as your cardio workout? i.e. squats or cleans?

If not, when is the most appropriate time to do these exercises? On days you work on that muscle? i.e. High rep, low weight squats as a cardio workout on days you do heavy squats?
