How do obese people lose so much weight so fast?

What i mean is how do obese people go from the 300+lb range to like 250's within weeks? You always hear about people who lose that much weight really fast, and even my cousin told me he lost 10 pounds walking on a treadmill halfhour a day for 2 weeks.

Just doesnt make sense to me how if losing weight is ALL ABOUT CALS IN VERSUS CALS OUT, then how do these people do it since thier obviously not burning about 20,000 fat calories???

    jus curious

I think it's simply because they have so much more to lose, more of the fat will begin to burn off as opposed to someone closer to a healthy weight (in which the body becomes more reluctant and stubborn).

    In my nooby opinion:

    1) Moving their body requires lot of energy.
    2) Their body are not efficiently dealing with cals, because it used to have it in excess. It results they are burning more cals then other people for the same workout.

Not too hard to understand, it shows you that everyone body is different and reacts differently. Everyone calorie requirements are different and it is impossible to use a "standard" method of telling that. I see many people asking questions about "I am 500 below maintenace and I am still not losing weight". That is because although you maybe 220 pounds you personally don't need to eat 2200 calories in order to remain the same weight. Maybe for your personal body all you need is 1900. To sum it up, you just have to know your own body and through trial and error figure out what works and what doesn't.

Someone fatty, when compared to someone at a normal weight range, will burn more calories by just standing at somewhere and breathing/living/whatever. Plus the fact that the water loss at the beginning is huge. But i still wondering how one person, no matter his weight, can drop like 50lb in few weeks. Maybe surgery, i guess.

gooseguy312: Not sure if this is to simplistic but try carring around a back pack with 100lbs in it 24 hrs a day and see if your weight dons't drop faster then the charts indicate.

If someone goes from consuming like 7000 calories to 2500 over night, they're probably going to shave a few pounds.

everyone is different. not all obese people lose weight fast, and some do. Peoples metabolisms are all different. I have friends who are skinny who consume way more calories than me, and live on fast food but they dont gain weight. If i eat fast food i can gain weight the next day from the exact same meal. To many different factors to determine in why some people can lose weight fast and some can't.

I was morbidly obese when I started cleaning up my eating habits and for months I was averaging 4-5lbs weight loss per week. After my weight came down the rate of loss has tapered off as well (but I'm still making good progress).

You can actually check out my bodyspace page for week-by-week weigh-ins from the last ~1.5 years. It really did come off quickly at first, which was a godsend b/c it gave me the motivation to stick with it.

I just THINK of it like this, you eat calories and your body compensates by how many calories you eat. You eat a lot, you get fat to compensate. Kind of like your body wants to be at maintenance level. If they have a maintenance level of 25,000 calories (just a guess) then that means they can loose like 3-4 pounds a day by eating normal amounts of food.

But that's just how I think of it, it's probably not true but it makes sense to me.

Well, the reason is because they are moving weight. Since they are heavier than most people they do more physical work. It's like what burns more calories, moving a 45 lb plate or 25 lb plate the same distance?
    Just be yourself.
